After carefull thought into all of the build, decided to go with a Currie Extreme Duty housing for the bigger axle tube and thickness. Placed order for it this week. Will be standard width. Unfortunately the axles I recieved from Yukon are standard replacement axles for a stock 9" Bronco Housing which have a backspacing intended for drum brakes. My options are now limited tostock drum brakes, going to a custom setup with likely no parking brake or the Wilwood setup with internal parking brake. Weighing those options out now while the housing is built!
Can't Currie set it up with Explorer Discs?

Well this is where it gets complicated... I am an idiot with this stuff, but here is what I know. The Yukon axle shafts I got are direct replacement for a stock Bronco 9" housing. They are 32" in legnth and require a 2.36" offset. The explorer disc brake kits require a 2.5" offset. So the answer I got was no.... the explorer discs would not bolt up. I am still researching some more, but I have to have the housing built with the third and axle shafts that I already have, so I will need to work around that. Worst case I have to plop down the loot on Wilwoods or stick to Drums....

Run what I ran on my old race truck, weld-on ruffstuff brake caliper mounts, 1 ton chevy calipers, and dodge dakota 4x4 front rotors. Also, use a line lock for an "emergency" brake. Should be good for "emergencies" :)

Seconded. I run the GM Metric calipers on my early Bronco 9". You just need to weld on the mounts.

that setup is cheap/easy but no parking brake can suck at times.

agree a line lock can work for a short term brake though due to bleedoff I wouldn't trust it for a long while.

That being said I plumbed one in the crew & plan on doing one in the supercab. I have a few extra swagelock vlaves for this here as I bought a lot of 5 when I grabbed the ones for my trucks.

I did bronco front rotors with gm metrics and ruff stuff brackets. Just barely fit with the rotor backspace. I would have rather gon with a bolt on bracket so in the future I can upgrade with out a grinder. Willwood makes dual piston replacements for the gm metric too.

Has anyone used these brackets?

Also would anyone be interested in a specific bolt on caliper bracket/ bearing retainer that would use the same rotor in front and a gm metric for the back.

The idea of an emergency brake is that you can still stop the vehicle if you loose all braking pressure or have a mechanical failure of the pedal itself. The e-brake should be entirely separate.

I remember riding with my uncle in his '90 Bronco and we were on the highway going 70 mph, traffic started slowing down so we tried to slow down too and then one of the front brake hoses just bursts, rendering us with only an emergency brake (literally) to slow down. Luckily it held up just fine to get us off the highway and even all the way home with just the emergency brake for stopping.

On my '79 I now run the brake lines straight from the master cylinder (no combination/proportioning valve) so that both front and rear are completely separate since I don't have a functioning emergency brake. I have a junkyard unit to install in it just so I'll have the working brake for the times I leave the truck on a hill. I feel really uneasy leaving it on a hill with no parking/emergency brake.

So what your saying is you need a .125 shim between the axle and the disk. That is pretty easy to do...........

I believe the offset means n needs to go he ther way, so would need to shave off that amount ff the back side of my axle shafts.......again, I believe.....I'm not knowledgeable in this area. The housing will be done n 10 days, once done I will try disc kits at Currie to see what will work out.

This is the one that I believe bolts up......

Factory Bronco axles are a 2.5 offset. Ford only used 2.36 on cars in the 50s and 60s. Explorer brakes should work fine.

I've installed quite a few Explorer and F150 setups onto 9" axles and never encountered this problem.

Tony. Listen to Philo and get the spacers.. I have done dozens of custom 9" housings with explorer brakes. But then again I have Moser make the shafts to compensate for the offset.

Got the 9" all put together. The guts of my 8.8 will be going to Dicker!!

Did the following:
35 Spline Yukon Grizzly
4.56 gears
Currie Extreme Duty Housing
Leduc VSS
Lengthened the driveshaft
Wilwood Disc/Parking Brake setup
Deaver Q80 Leaf Pack

Side note.... for those of you NOT running a longer driveshaft, not sure how you are pulling it off, very little spline engagement left at full droop. I would hate to see what happened with a hit that stretches something out a tad......

Big thanks to Jonny Lightning, did a great job with assembly and install.

Went from a 8.8" to a 9"

After pulling the flange off the original shaft and adding the conversion u-joint, when we dropped this hung all out, there wasn't much left in terms of spline engagement.

Mikey, thanks a lot, me too. Glad to see it sit a little taller.
