I just got an '05 F150, 4x4 Supercrew. I hate it. The POS 5.4 ticks, and the 4 wheel drive doesn't work. It's got some pathetic vacuum hub 4 wheel drive system that is proving to be a real joy to troubleshoot.

She sounds like a real beaut! The ticking could be a few things. Camshaft phaser, flattened cam lobe.... Decent engines until they have issues.


I think I already posted, but my current daily drivers are my 92 Explorerm manual trans, manual transfer case and manual hubs... mmm, I looove the manual stuff. And, my 65 Falcon. The Bronco has been parked behind my work for several months now.....

94 ford ranger 4.0 litre manual trans and manual everything else. Gets 22 mpg. Easy yo work on and maintain.

Hmm the older 5.4 motors are naturally loud motors. Our 05 expy is loud and likes to idle rough and tick, but I must say it is a pretty strong motor. I have beat on it pretty hard and it just takes it..

I love my comfortable 99 f350. I average 14mpg diesel. 7.3L with reprogrammer 395 HP. Funny thing is on stage 1 I get 11mpg average and I get 14 on stage 3 program with max hp. I just need to not mash the throttle to the floor all the time.

Mitsubishi Triton (L200) Twincab pick-up with 2.5 DI-D common rail turbo diesel 4 cyl. 5 speed 4WD. Almost finished the flat-bed for it at work and thinking about a decent bullbar and MT's after Xmas. 31 mpg around town and 34 on highway @ 65 mph. AC, PW, PS, Cruise control, 6 speaker stereo, leather wheel and gearknobs, etc.

Resist the feeling to modify the 1.8t

Actually 1.8t mods very well.... Just change timing belt on time. The exhaust valves are sodium filled and not cheap to replace

It has a front mount inter cooler. Coilovers and that's pretty much it. I'm not going to touch anything else!!! It's the main reason I got an automatic so I can resist doing any crazy mods.

I actually just got done talking to my audi service guy and scheduled the timing belt to be done in the next 2 weeks.

I thought it was because you could not drive a manual.

If you modify anything - re-wire the sucker. LOVE the looks of the A4's and they are quick/fun. It would be what I was looking at for a driver if they didn't have the VW wiring issues/nightmares.

Those cars don't have any wiring issues Steve. I owned two Audis, and three VW 1.8t...one with 180k miles and the other with anywhere between 60-100k. Andy is right, timing belts is key, other than that, drive and enjoy!!!

I'll dig up my pics of those and post up.

Your car may not have issues. My uncle works on a crapload of them & is the one that pointed out the issue. Plus my friend Kam's 1.8T had wiring nightmares & my other friend's beetle is a mess. Could be hit & miss but I'm not risking it due to how many my uncle has had to fix.

Wierd...ask him what specifically the issues are. I'm curious cause I'm planning on grabbing anther in the future and would want to know what's up.

I had the following
2000 passat 1.8t
2002 passat 1.8t
2002 audi a4 sedan 1.8t
2004 audi avant 1.8t
1999 Jetta 1.8t

Vic had a 2001 audi a4 also 1.8t
And Gabe had a 1998 passat 1.8t

Biggest issues are faulty coil packs, fuel pumps at 100k and the timing belt service. Never had any other issues with any tf them. The 2002 a4 I bought new and sold when it had like 160k miles.....

Based on what he told me it was wiring gremlins in general. He's chased a bunch of random stuff down. Don't know the years of those cars or the specific car, but I know he's had a few passats and a bunch of jettas with isues, as well as an audi TT a few A4's and a couple S's.
I just remember him saying if you are going to get one then lease it as at 5ish years they seem to fall apart wiring wise.

My friends A4 (think it was an '02) seemed to spend more time in the dealership than she had it to drive. I know her main issues were the power windows & the AC control stuff. She'd take it into the dealer, they'd have it for a week, fix it under warranty & 2-3 days after she'd get it back it would do the same thing again, or start a new problem. She was the 2nd owner & sold it after 6 months as she couldn't take it anymore. Seemed to be the switches or realays that were the main culprit if she relayed what the dealer told her to me correctly.

The VW bug seems to be just a cluster of all sorts of systems breaking down. Windows are bad, AC controls too I think. Cruise control, etc. My friend has owned it since new & is just driving it till it won't start anymore at this point is what she said. Pretty sure that one's a '99

Oh, and if I wasn't clear it's nothing to do with the motors really. The 1.8 & others seem like a really good platform. It's the chassis wiring that seems to be the main issue & my uncle seems to have worked on cars spanning the different engines range.
