4.56 or 4.88 gears with 35's??

Hello All,
My 96 is the first OD equipped truck I have ever had that ran a set of 35's-- the engine is the 5.8 fyi. On my early broncos I run a 35 and typically run a 4.56 gear with a C4. Being that the 96 does have an overdrive is the 4.88 reasonable? A 4.88 seems like it would be perfect to me and the gear that I have always said I would run if I put a AOD in any 66-77 bronco.

4:56 will be plenty! My buddy runs 4:56 on his F-1 with 35's and a 5.8 with the E4OD. Your actually gonna wanna go lower with a truck with overdrive. You have an e4od which if I'm not mistaken stands for electronic 4 speed overdrive. Which is 4 speed with overdrive so like 5. Being having a 4'speed plus do means your motor doesn't work as hard to get up to speed as it has more gears... I'd do 4:88 with a C4 and 4:56 with an E4OD.

E4OD is not a 5spd automatic....4th gear is OD

Most find that for a dual purpose street/dirt truck, 4.56s are good, dirt only 4.88s

My truck is doing around 2150 at 75 mph with 31" and 3.55. What speed is that chart set to? Or is it for c4/c6 (no od)?

Most of those matrix charts are based on 60mph in a 1:1 gear... so 3rd gear of a c6 or E4OD.

I run 4.88s with 35s and love the setup. I can cruise the highway still at 70 with no issues rpms are around 2600 I also run with 35s. For me I am glad I went with 4.88s

Hard question to answer. Variables are motor power, weight and where you will be driving.
You will like a bit better mileage for a daily driver with the 4.56 compared to 5.88s.
Guys with 3 speed trannys probably would opt for 4.56 or 4.10 regardless of power
With big power I know 4.10s work just fine with a C6 and the still high revs kill the mileage.
With big power a E4OD would be great with 4.10s.
My heavy weight stock 96/35s has 4.56 and has all the drawbacks that come with being slow.

BTW, for a strictly off road rig the shorter 3 speed trannys rule and in that case a C6 with 4.10 or 4.56 would be the good choice. The thing about any 3 speed is the converter is always slipping and eating power and mileage. With the E4OD you can lock the converter and run in 1, 2 or 3rd and be much happier with low tranny temps and good pulling power in high or low range.

I have 4.88 with 35s and E4OD. It humms a little on the freeway but in the dirt its nice. I can get up to 55-60 in 2nd gear in the real rough stuff but it kind of falls on its face when I shift to 3rd. Maintains speed but doesnt keep accelerating. I am not sure if 4.56 would strech out 2nd or just make it fall on its face worse. I am opting to just try and get more power out of the motor rather than regear. Hope that helps.

The engine and trans are just stock 5.8 and E4OD-- I do have a 95 5.8 with a E303 cam with a true GT-40 lower and some other things--it on a stand that could go in but I really dont want to do a full engine swap anytime soon honestly. That 5.8 while not crazy power has for sure more power than the stock 5.8 in it now. The 4.88's make sense with the E4OD in my mind but I am appreciative of the opinions for sure!
