My best mate and I had a range day last Sunday. He to run in the new barrel in his refurbished
.222R Martini Henry, and me to try some Federal 150 SP in my Lee Enfield. I've been using Privi
Partisan with somewhat dubious results, mostly the difference in apparent powder charging, as some
go off like a cannon and I have to litereally smack the bolt open with the heel of my hand to reload.
Anyway, after a frustrating session off sandbags, I resorted to old faithful, off-hand with sling and boy,
was I impressed.

Circa 1941 No 4 Mk 1*, mis-matched bolt (headspaced), ATI stock, Addeley Precision scope mount and
Bushnell XLT Trophy 6 - 18 x 50 duplex. It still has the original 2 groove 1941 barrel. The Addeley mount has
a 300 yd peep built in, thats why the front sight is still fitted.

I was pleased to see quite a few $2k + rifles there that weren't even close.

Rod , next time I visit my cousin, I'll get some pictures of his new / old lee enfield ' it's pretty sweet. My lee is a well used worn out old thing. Dad bought it from a neighbour, who was to stupid to own a gun.

So, everybody else , school me on the SKS , one of the local stores has russian ones for $200 , or do I want a chinese or yugo model. This would be my first semi auto.

Make sure who ever you get the sks from will garranty the rifle, most have major jamming issues due to them being old surplus guns, back in the day they used corrosive powder and they get eroded at the location where the bullet leaves the cartridge. Basically if it get etched there the cartridge flares just enough for the ejector to slip off the rim of the cartridge. So you end up having to remove the loaded ammo and shove a ramrod of some kind down the barrel to get it out of the chamber. Other than that there good ol Junkers that work well and are fun to shoot. There worth more with a wood stock also. The mint condition wood stock ones still catch a decent price tag. The only other thing that causes them to jam is the bypass tube( for lack of proper terminology) anyway there's a rotate able button on the front that opens a secondary gas tube for use with rocket propelled grenades. This port needs to be in the standard position or it spells misfires jams ect. Cheap good guns though. If I was to buy another one I'd get a siaga. There modernized versions of the same platform. There around 499$ but its brand new no headaches or heart aches when trying to find a decent barrel. Hope it helps.

Did I mention the siagas are sold in 12 guage, 308 and 7.62x39( ak47/sks caliber) the full auto 12 guage siaga looks fun. There's a vid on YouTube that's funny of some Russian dude. The guy shoots an exploding target in a refridgerator in one of the vids and schrapnel flys into the camera mans neck and the camera falls over. The next scene is the Russian host agian saying "I've gotta get my friend to the hospital until next time"

Found it. Watch the end of this vid, I found another while searching the guy blows up and f-150 sadly but nearly gets nailed by the passenger door. Anyway this is the siaga 12 guage. It's much cheaper than the spas 12 but its based on an sks/ak design same as the smaller versions.

Yes philo you are correct but similar gas port design and bolt spring to my knowledge, they also shoot the same round.

SKS is not made aftermarket like the AK to my knowledge?

Also, most common AK round is 7.62x39 but I have some that are 5.45x39 and 7.62x51. These days you can build/buy a new AK in almost any caliber.

I haven't spent a lot of time researching the ak hop ups and aftermarket stuff, good to know though.
