Start modifying it and see how fast it drops. I like Rangers but I know I'd modify it to the point that it would get about the same fuel economy as my Bronco and at that point I'd rather drive the Bronco.

I got a friend who bought a 3 cylinder geo metro. He gutted the car minus the driver seat. Removed all interior and accessories, then hole sawed holes all over inside to lighten the car further. Not shure how much weight was cut but he's up to over 50 miles a gallon. Now That's a genuine tight wad comuter car.

Isn't there suppose to be a bunch of new diesel cars coming out with over 50mpg?

9.5mpg in the Bronco this week.

Got the dash back together and even got the radio to work, even though only one speaker works I'll take it as a win.

My buddy had a 95.5 Tacoma (was the split year they made both the Taco and the older pickups) with the 3.4L and a 5-speed. That thing got crazy good gas milage and had 33's as well. My next truck will be a Tacoma just like it because driving the Mustang with the mystery motor and the high stall TC isn't good for fuel economy in heavy traffic (although it still pulls no less then 11.5 mpg in heavy traffic and at least 20 mpg with no traffic). My Bronco drops to 6 mpg in heavy traffic in L.A.

I still probably put more miles on it in one year than most people on here do to theirs but my fuel bills are outrageous to say the least, haha!
My tacoma mileage BLOWS. It's 18 MPG on a good day with the 33's. And that's a 4 banger and 5 speed!!! I bought the thing to get good mileage & boy was I surprised when I started looking at it.

a 2wd may get better mileage and I'm sure it would do better with either stock tire size or if I re-geared it, but as it sits it sucks.

My 89 ranger with the 2.3L was better with the 33's and my dad's '96 blows the thing away mileage wise, but not power wise. Then again the '96 still has stock tires and can barely turn them up a hill...

I believe you since I saw how much the hamsters were working up those hills in Baja. The 3.4L has a lot more power though and as such gets better fuel economy for the style trucks that we build. My friend's 95.5 Tacoma had the 3.4L with a 5-speed and was also 4x4 with 33-inch X-Terrains and it got unbelievably good fuel economy and had plenty of power to boot.

I think it's fair to say the comparison is like that of a YJ on 33s with a 4.0L inline-6 vs. a 2.5L 4-cylinder with 33s. Stock, the 4-cylinder gets better fuel economy but modified it gets worse than the inline-6.

Makes sense. The way I torture the poor hamsters with my right foot doesn't help MPG either.

Anyone know what would cause my truck to stall when I gas it when I leave work? It works fine in the morning, it works fine after it stalls. It just started doing this when leaving work.

If it's hot it could be the fuel boiling off in the line which will allow you to start it up and move a bit before it stalls out trying to take off. I thought this was the problem with my old '71 Dodge Colt and I stalled it coming out of my uncle's shop more than a few times.

I later found out the fuel pump was not working very well and would loose fuel pressure in the line (mechanical pump) which only allowed me to use the fuel that was in the carburetor bowl before stalling out. Once I got it to fire it was fine until I shut it off again and let it sit for a few minutes. I wonder if you might be having the same problem..

What temps are involved? Does it sit in the sun? Could be fuel pump and heat? I don't know. If it works fine in morning, I would rule out fuel pressure regulator since it would bleed down overnight.

Both times it stalled out it was probably almost 70 and had been sitting in the sun all day.
Tonight it was back down below 50 before I left work and it ran fine.
In the morning when I have gone to work it is in the 30's.

And then...when I got out to open the gate tonight I noticed this:

Let me try that again.

What is that thing, it was clicking on and off about every 4 seconds.

That's the super pimp air conditioning. I'm surprised you tried to get it to work in 30 degree temperatures, haha! The clicking was from the compressor's clutch activating and opening.

Well then that's pretty weird. I'm not well versed in air conditioning operation but I don't think it should be activating if you just turned the heat on. If you had it on max ac or ac setting you could still have the actual heater on from the temperature range lever.

Sounds like the ac switch is turned on, stuck on or stray voltage to the compressor relay. Turn the compressor off and your gas mileage will improve:)

The ac comes on with the defrost setting to function as a dryer. My 95 Bronco did this. I am not sure what year they started, but I am guessing in the eighties. I don't think my 82 Econoline cycles the compressor on defrost, but saw reference to it in an 83 F150.
