Nothing major. The new PS pump failed on the trail and my excursion into the aquatic abyss made my electrical system cranky. The taller didn't have time to throw a pump in, but he got the codes cleared so the trans would shift properly. Yeah, I forgot to put my scanner in too. Haha! It's nice to have a resource close by. The taller owner's son is a very well trained, thorough, young mechanic. Paying him keeps my hands clean when I'm on vacation. Haha! Had we been there for another day, I would have picked up another pump and swapped it myself though.
Tell us about your adventure!! How was it? Have you returned already or are you posting from BFE somewhere?
We departed early on Wed morning and headed south. The destination, Bahia de Los Angeles to work BFG pit 3. Wanted to do something active for the race instead of watch since our prerun down the peninsula was canceled... so, we contacted Frank D'Angelo and he offered up the pit there at BOLA. So we headed south but decided to stay over night/camp south of El Rosario. We stopped at about 1615 and set up camp... sunset at 1647. We found a nice little spot off the highway, no one around... quiet.
We got up early and headed south on Thursday to make the pit to help set up at noon... when we got there, we found our reservations had been taken so we spent some time trying to arrange new accommodations... not happening with everyone in town. So, we headed to the pit and help get everything setup. Since we weren't a part of the group pit (these guys had all been together for the past 3-years and everyone knew their job... so we helped where we could. Once everything got set up, we waited for the first trucks to come through...
At about 1845, the first truck came roaring through, BJ Baldwin... with the Policia hauling along after him... sirens ablaze and lights flashing... don't know if it was an escort or he was trying to pull him over for speeding (it appeared that he was blowing through town much faster than the 60mph limit.
After that, the trucks just kept on coming... class 1 and so on. All through the night the race continued... the race was still going on at 0300... 0400... 0500... stragglers... but they kept on coming through.
Pretty amazing... pit 3 was at the 396 mile point and we did not replace ONE tire... not on any of the cars or no spares... no one had any tire failures when they came through. AMAZING! We only had a few repairs, Bill and I were the fab/repair crew... we had limit strap replacements, shock adjustment, welding on a 3-link (with a 110 buzz-box... not gonna hold), I helped the BC challenge guys with a a-arm uni-ball replacement. And, on all the cars that stopped for fuel, we were the checkers for tires, suspension, steering, essentially, all the under car stuff. Very impressed with the overall condition of the cars that stopped at the 400-mi mark.
Most of the cars had come through by 0600 so we helped pack up the pit. We also found that Los Vientos found us a couple of rooms (occupants had taken off), so we headed to the hotel for a shower. We spent the day there enjoying the beach, pool, bar and restaurant. Absoultely fantastic time... caught a couple of zz's out by the pool and then enjoyed home made margaritas...
