cruise control shut off switch - Ford recall

Post by H-rider »

I was wanting to know who on here has dealt with this.
What I understand is that this switch mounted on the end of the master cyl on 93-96 models is hot all the time and the cel material that seperates the brake fluid from the electrical internals can go bad and start a fire. Some claim this has happened when the vehicle is not running.
Has anyone had this recall done at dealer or done themselves?
If you think you can or think you can't...you're right!

Had a couple done at the dealer. It's fairly easy & they should have the parts (new wiring pigtail thing) there & know what they are doing so it should be quick & painless for you.

I know it affected the 97 and 98 non-Bronco stuff as well, not sure of the full range of years. F250, F350, Expedition. Had them all done after they sent dozens of notices. Have seen pics of trucks that caught fire while parked in the garage that were traced back to this.

did it in my dad's 96 ranger as well as my old 2001 expedition so I know it's not confined to 93-96. Not sure how early of a model it starts on though or how late of a model it carries to either.

Yes this is a real problem. Bought my 96 and the harness connector was melted to the switch and fuse was blown. Symptom no brake lights and fluid leaking slightly from switch. I ran it unhooked and replaced the fuse to get brake lights back for quite awhile. Took it in for the recall. Ford replaced the switch plugged it to the melted/ shorted harness plug and sent me on my way with no brake lights or cruise control. What nice guys.

I am surprised it can get hot enough to burn some cars down without blowing the fuse but it has and enough to melt the plug on mine

I had this done a long time ago, but if I recall correctly the Ford tech walked over to my Bronco in the parking lot and had it replaced/finished within 5 minutes.
Bronco was stolen in Berkeley, CA in 2014

I'm very slowly making my bronco go fast!

Wow... They've been plagued by this problem for well over a decade. I believe it has also affected the Super Duty at least up to 2003. I don't know what year this problem started but I hope my '89 doesn't have any issues like this.

The blame is on Texas Instruments for a bad design Blame Ford for ignoring the need for a fuse on an always hot switch.
Going to the dealer is unacceptable even for a free fix. THey willjuse eat up your free time. Just add a 5a fuse on thehot wire. DIY special

On the late models SD the wire is only hot with key on. Broncos are hot always.
Do it before your truck burns to the ground.

This problem burned my grandma's car to the ground along with her garage and alot of priceless stuff in the attic. Its a very serious issue.
I'm just here for the views. It helps me feel wanted.

After a bit of searching I found some information on various recalls for Broncos.

http://www.motortrend.com/used_cars/11/ ... o/recalls/

Just found out '89s were recalled for faulty ignition switches that could catch fire. WTF!!

I really hope this has been addressed already since it was a recall when it was practically new.

All yuo need to do is look at the switch . If Ford fixed it you will see a pigtail from the switch to th harnes wire.

I had it done on my 2001 Super Duty. I'd have them do it - takes just a few minutes to plug it in. I have a co-worker who lost a '95 Lightning in his garage due to the issue. Truck burned up and nearly burned the house down along with it!

I had the one in My F250 replaced after it almost sent Me into the back of a car in traffic. That was an attention getter when I stepped on the brakes and the motor kept going..........

Of course just to keep you paranoid... It is not the switch that catches fire it is the wires running to the switch that go up in smoke. They replace the thing that shorts the wire most often but do not fix the main problem that a tiny wire does not have the proper circuit protection. Im sure it has something to do with not wanting Toyota like run aways.

I thought they proved that Toyotas weren't going transformers on people and flying down the highways at wide open.

I did experience the throttle pedal getting stuck at wide open in my Bronco though and almost rear-ended a small SUV in the process. Pedal got caught between the floor mat and the cracked factory rubber floor mat. It was entirely my fault and the jumping on the brakes hard and shutting off the ignition stopped it easily. All that was entirely my fault for failing to address the cracked floor mat and also for wooding the skinny pedal in traffic. It wasn't the first time it's happened but it was certainly the first time in that Bronco (second time in a Bronco I own) but I still can't believe people don't think to shut the engine off.

I blame all the modern age electrical shenanigan babysitters in cars these days that make drivers more incompetent. A car that can park itself or brake/swerve because people are too busy not paying attention to notice an obstacle on the road, that's just pathetic! What's next, a car that changes its own tire when it gets a flat?

Last I checked, parking was an essential part of passing the driver's test. Rant Over!

Sorry for slight derail
