randomthoughtsracing wrote:Exactly, the shock pictured does generate heat at the reservoir due to the second valve stack. The length of hose pictured would definately not be ideal for any heat exchange.

Try some rough math on the hose volume vs. the rod volume.

-8 hose is 7/16ID = .4375" this gives a 12" -8 hose an internal fluid volume of around 8.24 cubic inches.

7/8 rod is .875 giving it a displecement of 1.373 per inch of rod stroke.

So in order for even a little bit of fluid (let alone a big shot) from the shock to reach the reservoir the shock would need to cycle over 6". An 18" hose would need more than 9" of stroke.

As a subsequent design I ran this setup on the front of AGM's class 1 car at the 1000. The piggyback reservoir is full of fluid and the second reservoir houses the dividing piston. San Felipe is coming...

I spy with my eye........ Blackhawk adjusters on those 9100s as well right Joel?

Joel and team have been able to pass that technology along to the standard resi's now as well..... he threw a set of those on the front of my bronco

Cheapest would be to allow air to circulate around the shock and reservoir more efficiently. Relocate the reservoirs away from heat sources. You could possibly run some sort of oil heat exchanger midstream between the reservoir and shock body, or thirdly would be to install fins on the reservoir.
the owner is in the process of building mini heatsinks for all the bypass tubes and some bigger ones for the actual body of it. we will see what they do

How did the heat sync's work out at BAP temp wise? I heard that you guys gave the Rose racing team a run for their money.

Cool, Joel! Do you guys have temperature data from before this modification?

When are you guys coming out with a 5" shock?

You guys can't let King up-stage you with their 4.5" shocks.

OT for a minute. Joel, I'm the tall guy, Greg, that was with the EB crew camped below the Bilstein camp at KOH. Couldn't believe the numbers of rigs you were helping out everyday. Was like a drive thru. LOL
Enjoyed hanging with you at our fire, hearing some great stories and will never call your shocks BilstEEns again. Think beer mug!! Who was the highest Bilstein finisher at KOH?
See you in the desert.

Front BlackHawks at San Felipe in the past have reached 225 but did not hit 250* on the temp strips. Rears would light off 250* but not 275* peak temp. I will try to get to the AGM pit after zoo road to check the temps with the pyrometer.

I am sure the new 4.5 will work just fine but at some point the weight associated with larger diamaters will become an issue. I would guess a wet weight aproching 100lb on those puppies. As I have said elsewhere when we decide to make a concerted trophy truck shock package they will be good, but till then the focus is on helping the mid field (and Broncos!). Remember when the current big players were focused on the little guy's race effort? Theres more to desert racing than Trophy Trucks.

That was a fun trip, thanks for letting me join in the fireside festivities.

There were 9 Bilstein race vehicles at the start of the week 4 didnt make or broke at the LCQ. We converted a racer onsite who busted brand X shocks and ended up making the LCQ and the race. 6 race starters, Sacalas finished 26th and Schneider finished 33rd (Schneider won the 4400 class in Parker!).

Bravo! You guys are really beginning to win me over. Just need an excuse to sell my 3.0's.

Dammit, I just wrote out a long post and delted by mistake.

Summary, sell king 3.0 and run a bilstein 2.65" with a resi, and a piggyback. The additional fluid of the piggyback (175ccs I think Joel told me at KOH) makes up for the difference in diameter.. and voouala!! You have a Bilstein equal or better than the 3.0 King.

Joel, feel free to use the Bronco as a test bed!

I can not tell you guys the love that I am feeling from Joel and the crew at BilSTEEN (say it right or Joel will kick you in the tater tots). Seriously impressed and the Bronco is working well, can not wait to try on the new rear air bumps!

Save yorself a pile of money and try a pair of the Carli pistons before you sell the 3.0's.

Just reading what they did...you can do that without swapping pistons. Similar to what I have always done to kings.

Now, that's exactly why I like you guys. Very interesting. Does Bilstein manufacture the pistons for Carli?
