You modify the stock buckets to allow you to run a longer shock.trujillo351 wrote:thanks scott. whats all involved in modifying buckets? i have a friend who fabricates/welds. Still not completely sure what purpose the modified buckets serve.??????????????

Re: help me find shocks!
mine are just modified to fit the shocks and reinforced. if you are going to be using your bronco as a weekend worrior/weekday grocery getter,my advice would be to get a set of the 5100 bilstiens and run them in the stock position. it works great, and you will be saving some coin.
my next rig will be that way.simple simple simple........

Re: help me find shocks!
Great post, this should be added in the sticky threads for the "start your go fast front and rear"ChaseTruck754 wrote:The shocks we typically use are sold based on shock travel usually. These numbers are general and rounded usually. The common sizes are 8" stroke, 10", 12", 14", 16", 17" (bilstein) and then the loooong 18". This stroke is the difference in measurement from eyelet (bolt mounting hole in bushing or heim) to eyelet from the extended and compressed length.
To do it right mounts are often built around the shock. With kit parts however this is not the case, and the best way to do it is to get the parts on the truck and then measure the distance between the shock mounting holes at both full suspension compression and droop. You'd then select the shock that most matches what you have. Many people are too lazy to do this and just guess.
Another good option is to call the people who made the parts you are suing and ask them what shock the parts were built around. Keep in mind shock lengths vary from maker to maker. All the eye to eye lengths for over the counter shocks (ie not custom order) from the major brands (King, SAW, Bilstein, Fox , etc.) are available on the company websites.

Re: help me find shocks!
I can attest to having 5100s all on all 4 corners, This setup is as good as it gets without a major shock upgrade. Im happy with mine, its faster than it should be for what it is.

Re: help me find shocks!
If you're going with Bilsteins then you want the dual-shock coil-buckets so you can run all 4 5100's up front. If you are upgrading to a taller shock mount (whether it's a custom bucket or modified stock), I recommend a single 2.5"x10" shock behind the bucket as stated above.

They work well because you don't have to relocate a bunch of stuff under the hood. Installing them is a piece of cake.D1cker1 wrote:why does the single coil bucket work well.. Instead of the stock if i run a sigle 5100?

Re: help me find shocks!
Sorry to bring back an old thread, but thought this was better than starting a new one....
As I'm gathering parts for my truck, for now, it will be stock dual shock buckets and stock rear shock mount...4" either Rancho or Pro-Comp springs(more than likely Pro-Comp), Rancho drop brackets and arms, and Deaver F53's...
I'm thinking the 5100s will be good enough to get me into more trouble than I should for a daily driver.....? is, has anyone seen/used the new(er) 5160's that I think are 5100s with resi's and a stem mount up top? If so...thoughts?
Thanks in advance,
Robert

Re: help me find shocks!
if i remember correctly, 5160 is a stock mount shock with a resi? yes it would help with cooling. there is a guy on here that has a connection with bilstien, I cant remember his name but it would be well worth the wait if you could order a 5160 with custom valving.....

Re: help me find shocks!
Yes, that's my understanding of what the 5160 as well... I did reach out to Joel on here (randomthoughtsracing) but he stated he was more on the Race/Go Fast side of Bilstein and didn't have an contact internal at Bilstein I could talk to and suggested I talk to T&J Performance in Orange with questions/pricingDezertbronco wrote:if i remember correctly, 5160 is a stock mount shock with a resi? yes it would help with cooling. there is a guy on here that has a connection with bilstien, I cant remember his name but it would be well worth the wait if you could order a 5160 with custom valving.....

Re: help me find shocks!
You could also try emailing Shane Cassad at Bilstein. He's runs the sales side of Bilstein and should be able to get you going in the right direction. T&J is also a good shop as well but I would try getting in contact with Shane first though.
Also, the 5160 is an excellent choice. We did 200 miles through the Mojave desert in a Cherokee with 5160's and it got through everything easily and handled the whooped out sections really well.
