Power Steering Pump Upgrades/Coolers

Transmission oil coolers out of Explorers work great as power steering coolers. They're the nice stacked type with 3/8 barbs. They also have nice flanges to mount with.

Power steering systems don't like the backpressure of stacked plate coolers. Instead, use a design that uses a tube with fins for the steering cooler. They can be found in the junk yard on some cars or purchased new. Some are just a simple U shape, some have several U like a serpentine tube with fins.

Tranmissions and engine oil pumps can push through the stacked plate (radiator style) coolers easily.

Nope. I haven't found one either. Been looking myself for about 4 years now since I heard of this upgrade. I too would have loved to get a 60-7272 pump (or Napa #NSP 816795) to replace my whining stock Ford pump. Instead, I too thought about heading to my local Pick-n-Pull and find that pristine '96 5.0 Econoline Van and yank the Saginaw pump/bracket/pulley and do the swap...but just haven't gotten to it yet.

What I DID find is a performance replacement C2 pump built by AGR Performance for the Bronco...part #809156. About $136 from SummitRacing.com [http://www.summitracing.com/parts/agr-809156/] See photo below...

But then I did further searching tonight and found that AGR also builds what they call the "Super Pump"...a Saginaw-style pump that they list for (my) '96 Bronco as Part No. #867257. Yet I can only find a picture of their #847257 Super Pump which shows a Cardone-type steel adapter that looks like it allows their Super Pump to bolt to the aluminum P/S bracket on my '96. But the #847257 which they list for the 80-89 Bronco.

So, I wrote them an email tonight and asked them if the #867257 also has the metal bracket to adapt it to the OEM '96 P/S bracket. Will post the results when they respond.

Yes, that is the same one that comes up when I look for the 60-7272 'replacement' to the older Cardone version that was a Saginaw pump.

What is pictured is just a rebuilt Ford C2 pump...me thinks.

Yes, I think that is just a rebuilt stock C2 pump.

What do you mean by "internal difference?" Internal differences between what? Which pump(s) are you referring to?

They also show the same model # with an "F" in it and it says it has a filter...not sure where that would go or if necessary...

I agree with using the e-series saginaw pump. I did this swap and can turn my wheel on flat ground with one finger. I know flat turning isnt the best for a pump but wanted to see the differance. I got everything from my local pick a part for about $25 lines and all.

I am a fan of extruded aluminum tubing for power steering coolers as they have excellent cooling properties and the big plus of being rock resistant. The one I use in the race car is 3" ID and 12" long. Lee was the pioneer of off road steering and Blazer's box was originally done by him , so that's why I started with him. I send my box and pump to them after every long race to be magna-fluxed and checked. Over kill, maybe, but it's no fun when you turn the wheel and nothing happens.

Regarding my post from 2 weeks ago today (June 10th)...

I spoke to 'Matt' at AGR Performance today about his #809156 Ford C2 rebuilt pump...and the rest of his Super Pump line of Saginaw style pumps.

The AGR #809156 version of the Ford C2 pump is modified internally with some porting and polishing and is designed to use synthetic P/S fluid. He said the 'whine' is pretty much gone with his rebuilt C2 pump...as long as you use synthetic P/S fluid and a good fluid cooler.

I also confirmed that both the #867257 "Super Pump" Saginaw P/S pump for the '90-'96 Broncos...and the #847257 "Super Pump" for the '80-'89 Broncos BOTHhave the cast iron horse collar bracket attached to the front of the Saginaw pump (see picture above...with the 847257 part number written in chalk on the casting.) This bracket allows these pumps to bolt up directly to the stock Ford C2 P/S bracket...albeit with some "slight trimming" of the aluminum casting (top and bottom) to permit the 'canned ham' reservoir of the Saginaw pump to fit properly! Matt informed me that the shaft is also turned down to accept the original pulley from the C2 pump!

He referred me to this .pdf that shows what some of the trimming looks like in order to fit the canned ham housing into the bracket (http://www.agrperformance.com/AGR-Insta ... nstall.pdf). A few of those pictures also appear below...

Matt also mentioned that there is another option available to these two Super Pumps that further enhance their longevity. He said if you add the letter "T" to the end of the part number (when ordering), you get a stronger pump shaft, thrust bearings, special seals, and some other changes that really turn the pump into a special heavy duty model. Please call them for details.

So now...I'm not sure WHAT I am going to do on my '96 5.0. Maybe just the rebuilt #809156 C2 pump with a H/D cooler and Redline full synthetic P/S fluid...and call it a day...?

Same casting but a different shaft and reworked internally in addition to the horseshoe adapter.

The canned ham res is not much of an upgrade if your system has a cooler, filter, or other oil volume increasing modification.

The factory high pressure hose will work with if you have the correct Sag fitting. There are four, two standard and two metric. The only mod I had to do was lengthen the pressure sensor harness.
