Rebuilt the rear shocks last night. Thanks to a rookie mistake, didn't finish up until 11pm. Haha! One of the wear bands is worn with about 50% of the base metal exposed, but I think it will be fine for the August trip. Will pick up a pair from Kris later. Was unable to remove the top caps from the bodies. Made several attempts, but wouldn't budge. Wouldn't be concerned, but I think that's where one of them was leaking. How do the pros do it? With a super duper strap wrench?

Hey Brian,
The caps are usually put on with red loctite and you'll need to heat it up with a torch. I use a plumbers torch. I have a set of large set of V-blocks to grab the body to hold it.

Awesome. Thanks Tom! Next time I'm in there that's what I'll try. Was a bit hesitant to put heat to them...being a rookie and all.

It doesn't take a lot of heat to break it loose... so go gentle with the torch... it does work wonders!

King has had to destroy/cut a can sent in solely for top cap removal..totally stupid.

You should have seen the effort involved in removing the top caps from the shocks that eventually became your 4" reservoirs. What I found worked best was heat the body until it was smoking hot (try to keep it from discoloring), then spray the best penetrating oil you can get (I use a BG product) on the seam from the outside and inside. Then let it sit for a few minutes, then crank on it with a chain wrench. I think I disassembled 6 of them and hated every single minute.
A really, really good strap wrench might work and won't put bite marks in the can, but I hated the shocks enough at that point that I wanted them to have scars from our hours-long battles.

Decided to wait, because I think I'm going to re-valve and need to replace the wear bands too. Just not enough time before the trip. Want to test and tune first anyway. A bit more compression may be necessary. It does take big hits well, but it's a little sloppy in the middle. I think the front shocks will set the limits, because they rebound too slow. Without custom internal work it won't get much better. Excited to get out there again and get this thing dirty. Working on tying body parts together today. Then it's just the little stuff. If you're going to go through the trouble, I would add a few. You can plug them anyway. That way if you need more flow, it's just a matter of pulling the shock apart and no further machining.
