Personally I love the B2s going into the project with your eyes open and aware of limitations they can be a great rig. I drove one around for awhile that was basically stocked and it was a fun rig. Swapping the D44 up front if you want to maintain 4wd would be a good choice and with the swap up front and in the rear you can also go wider to help stability while retaining easy to find parts. With that said the down side IMO is availability of things like glass I dig Copykat's ride and back in the late 80s I remeber seeing a few even race. I say go for it!

Mine doesn't have a cage and it weighs in around 1970 Kgs (4334 Lbs).

Absolutely nothing wrong with the B2. They are cheeper than Explorers for sure. Nearly anything that can be done to an explorer can be done to the B2. Even share alot of the same parts.

i am thinking of a "trailer queen" to pull behind the motor home and use as like i use my bronco(minus the whoops and lead foot)
for race course research and mapping. this would have no cage or fiberglass(well maybe a hood) simple bumpers, nice flexy suspension
smaller tires, simple simple simple and economical.
yes an explorer would ideal due to the wheelbase and maybe go that route but if i do.....well full glass c/o's and hopped up c-4 trans and nice motor would be the deal. ive built one like that for someone and loved it but it was back in high dollar im trying to avoild. :)
NO JEEPS OF ANY KIND FOR ME.
I think that sounds like a good plan. My Explorer will be super simple. I plan to use a single shock behind the coil-bucket on the front. I might even use an 8" travel shock so it doesn't get close to the A/C box and I don't have to hack the fender liner. It will still have plenty of travel but will be an easier install. For the rear I'll use good leaves and a shock under the stock floor. Probably in the stock location. I'm guessing wheel travel will be 12-14" front and rear. If I get fancy anywhere it will be in the rear to get closer to full travel. But all will remain under the floor. Tires will be 31x10.50.

Its been a long time since i worked on one so please check my measurements before you buy or install. If you use custom springs they may be well over an inch thicker than the stock springs. Since the springs mount under the axle and the lower shock mount is on the spring plate, you will pick up that much more room for a longer shock. I think it will give you room for a 16 inch collapsed length shock. A 12 inch travel Bilstein short body shock has a 16 inch collapsed length.

My dad and I did a 5.0/T5 conversion on a BII when I was in high school. I know he has talked about getting rid of it recently. I could look into it if you're interested. We kept the fuel injection from the Mustang and it has a pretty much fresh set of 31" bfg all terrains.
My car is a hybrid; it burns gas and rubber.
