kuster bypass shocks questions

my 12 shocks i have on my bronco are friggin noisy...im curious if this is common on these old bypass shocks. the piston sits at ride hide hieght mid stroke in between the bypass holes.and clicks someting crazy.
is this normal?? sounds funny but its been annoying and has multiplied x 10 since i put my cage in the cab.....

I've heard that is a common problem with bypasses is they're really noisy.

yup - the sound carries through the tubes.

i know that the bypass's are a little noise, but this actually sounds like a bad hiem but it is not.
oh well i just have to deal with the wife complaining about ....

Is there a way to isolate it?

i dont know,thats what im trying to figure out now....i guess i could fill the tubes going through the fire wall with foam......just kidding.

by the way one is loader than the other....

Change your bypass springs to a stiffer spring or put a teflon washer between the valve and seat. You may have to machine the washers to get a set that works correctly.

This is actually done with fords new line of cars to help with road noise (not sure if it is still in the test faze tho and I could be wrong I will find the info on it again). They use a capsule that are in varied areas and when heated break open and expand and fill the hallow area. I actually thought about filling the cab cage tubes but all the stuff I thought about using was flammable/combustible ………and I’m not that crazy yet… but it would not increase weight that much if you found the right stuff????

i dont know everything is flamable and combustable haha i think that it'll just have be for now. i might do what Philo said and replace the springs. not going to worry about it right now. i'll just tell my wife to walk if she cant deal with it. haha

The great stuff foam is available in a non combustible formula for firewalls in houses and such. I plan on using a little in a few spots on my rigs.

The wife factor was the reason I was even trying to solve the issue....I guess I will do the same please just walk then scott said so.....lol

Thanks Philo....I may have to give this a try and see how it works....I have to make sure it can escape ???? What do you think fill before u weld each tube? Let s do a test run on scrap and see how it goes…..

i have done something simaler before on an old baja bug. i drilled a 1/4 hole at one end and filled it let it escape .
this is AFTER any welding was done.

Headsets...Once you are solid mounted you killed it for quiet even with sound matting and full interior IMO. I wanted to punch babies driving down zoo rd to morelia. I probably have the quietest bypass shocks next to black hawks and everything is still noisy.

4 seat intercom on the install list prior to next outting along with trans fan/cooler, tc lock up switch, and a few other things.

it worked ok but i was always wprried about repairs... baja bugs are crazy loud when they are caged....
headsets are on the list. i had intercom for a while but i sold it to a buddy for his race truck...

Not necessarily........ We just took a new pre-runner out and running down the course by zoo rd. we could have a nice conversation without headsets. 3" King BP's.......

You can replace the upper hiem with a urithane bushing to kill about 75% of the noise.........

Scott, Since putting the 6 tubes on the front and solid mounts, everyone that has ridden in my Bronco thinks it's going to fall apart. Haha!

I've also seen bypass shocks mounted to a stubby tube which is mounted to the main chassis via a couple of tubular bushing mounts.

This is similar to using a urethane bushing in the upper shock eye, but is probably more durable since you're using two urethane bushing mounts instead of one.

King's new IBP internal bypass uses clever internal architecture--no check valves. If you want a quiet bypass shock that's the one to investigate. You can actually add the IBP feature to any King smoothie or coilover, so you could end up using only one shock per corner if you wanted to.
