So it appears I made a mistake. The shock mounts on the hoops are too far out resulting in the coil hitting the tire at full tuck and full lock.

Bummer! But not a mistake someone else here hasn't made before you. That's one of the hard things about fabrication is thinking ahead of all the different pieces to the puzzle and trying to do all your testing before burning everything in. I know I've re-made parts I've already spent hours and hours on before by missing something like this. My guess is you probably won't do it again.
Cut the top tube with the tabs off the vertical tube. Rotate the tube so the tabs point up more and pull the shock in a bit. Tack and test cycle. Cut some material off the vertical tubes to lower things to try & get lengths right. Cycling everything definitely takes a lot of time. It's a bummer, but part of the deal to get things right.

Re: Carly's 96
Thank you Steve! Unfortunately the tabs have to come off as they're too big. I will end up with a different style I have and just reinforcing them. I knew it'd happen because of the changes in geometry as the suspension cycles. If I move the shock directly underneath the hoop and up 1" it'll sit just right to clear with some buffer. I'll chop and sand tonight then tack and re-cycle tomorrow.ChaseTruck754 wrote:Bummer! But not a mistake someone else here hasn't made before you. No worries! I'm not perfect. I cycled the suspension 15 times and the spring diameter was the one thing I forgot. I could've ran the tabs over the radius arm bolt but with the way the shock hoop is I have an option of running a second shock. Kinda bit me in the ass a bit but I'm too proud of the beam mount to change it.

Also disclaimer : if you wonder why this stuff is so expensive its because shops ran into problems too. The hours that go into it is what costs you. I'm just dumb enough to think I can do it myself.

Thank you Andy! It's a small step back but no big deal. Once I fix that I can move forward. I ordered new 35" General X3 tires yesterday and should be able to pick them up next week.Andy Jones wrote:You’re doing great, dude! Re: Carly's 96
It's not "dumb enough" by any means! For some it's a pride thing (liking to build their own), for some it's a time vs. cost thing (more free time than funds to spend), etc., etc. there's all sorts of reasons. I personally just love building stuff. Except when I make goofs like this, which we all do. I've got plenty of stories like this. Sadly my free time to build stuff like this has completely disappeared, so I'm living vicariously through others builds for a while.hobbyturnedobsession wrote:Also disclaimer : if you wonder why this stuff is so expensive its because shops ran into problems too. You know Steve to be honest that's my deal too. Spot on. When I drive the bug people old and young stop to talk about it. After that I wanted to say the same on Carly's bronco. It happens and it comes with the territory. It'll be cool when I stop to fuel it up and someone will ask who built what part. For most of it I can say me. That's huge in my book.

No worries. If you're not learning you should give it up. That's what keeps me involved.

Trial and error! That’s how I built the unicorn! You can see on my Bronco from where I once was, to where I’m at now, with my fabrication skills. I’m very happy with what I’ve accomplished on my rig. It’s like a resumé of sorts.!hobbyturnedobsession wrote:No worries. If you're not learning you should give it up. That's what keeps me involved.

We have new shoes. I'm a long way off but some stuff came together so I figured I should pick them up. 35 12.5 r15 General X3s. Never ran them before but I've heard good things.

Okay got the shock mount rotated. I am clearing the frame rails by just over 1.5" so all in all I'm good with that. I'll take it all apart fully weld and gusset then off to the driver side I go.
