95 F150 - Project Marilyn
Oh, I was confused because the bed bolts to the frame, so anything mounted to the bed bolts would be mounted to the frame. Carry on. Haha.

Take a slice out of the bed between the wheel arch and tail light and weld it back together.VintageIronFab wrote:Rod what does cut and shut the rear end mean?

Re: 95 F150 - Project Marilyn
Geoff at Giant did a lot of the bedcages bolted to the bed bolts. While I disliked the idea at 1st the more I thought about it that layout isn't bad. It's an easy starting point to build from for sure & makes a bolt in cage that is easier to remove & sell later if you change your mind. Downside is the bolts holding the bedcage on will be long as they go through the bed mounts. A big enough side load and it's easier for a failure sending the bedcage separate from the truck. BUT it's an odd scenario & if it happens you'll have big issues elsewhere in the truck as well so I wouldn't let this deter you from building one this way.

Re: 95 F150 - Project Marilyn
That's kinda my thoughts as well. I've made every part literally bolt on. While that's probably not best for like 1000 mile Baja blasts - I'm thinking it should be fine for the most part. If I do go to the frame it's still a bolt on piece. The bolt to the bed is just so damn easy that it's hard to resist.

Re: 95 F150 - Project Marilyn
Understand & agree. I'd be tempted by this setup as well due to ease.
Pretty much everything I do is bolt on. Something has forced my hand if I ever weld something to the frame. Sure it takes more thought & effort to build bolt on stuff, but if something breaks or you change your mind later you're not cutting stuff off and you can typically sell what you've decided you don't like anymore.

Re: 95 F150 - Project Marilyn
It is a challenge, but that's the fun of it...... to come up with a design that gives you what you need, without cutting up the truck or making it too complex. I'm working on a rollbar/bedcage to go in my truck, all bolt down to the bed bolts. I will do it this way, because the bed floor CANNOT take those stresses without cracking or tearing out. The floor is too thin, even with doubler plates, and with the way the chassis and bed flex, I'd prefer the bedcage bolted to the frame. Just my $0.02.VintageIronFab wrote:To build bolt on is a challenge to say the least.

Re: 95 F150 - Project Marilyn
I'll prob secure it to the bedcage actually. It's a smittybuilt unit- about $230 shipped. I wouldn't call it a toolbox honestly - but more of a storage box for gear and light tools. It is a nice piece though.

Well I'm taking the 18" plunge with a set of Giant Motorsports/Solid Shocks free bleed setup. Can't wait to get this thing in the chop for some testing!

I've been debating changing mine to the free bleed to get rid of the clacking. Let me know how you like them.
