so doing a bunch more research on this and trying to put together a lift for the thing. the coils i have are 18.5" tall unloaded. the tops of the springs are different than a TTB spring from what i can tell. the tops however are the same as a 1979 4wd spring. which finding lift springs for are quite easy, however the bottom spring retainers are different thant the stock setup on these trucks as the springs taper.

1, Im looking into 1999 and up 2wd Super Duty springs as an option
2, i have a call/email to autofab about getting some springs only from them.
3, i have the ability to fabricate a new bottom retaining cup and system to use the 4wd springs. i can build the same retaining cups that are used for the 4wd trucks with a single hole in the middle for a bolt much like the current setup. would be simple and i can get a 6" lift spring for those trucks whick is 22" length unsprung, which should put me in the ballpark for a 4" lift.

i really didnt think it would be this hard to put something together.

It's not that "hard" to put something together, it's just knowing what you are dealing with 1st and buying accordingly OR buying what you find for a deal & fabricating around it.

Superduty coils are a good option but I think the buckets on those trucks are really tall, so even a stock coil might be too tall for what you want.

As you are finding out it's going to be either buying the right part (which autofab will sell just coils), or doing a little fab to make something more readily available or found cheap used work. Making the stuff work won't be too bad. Worst part would be the stupid rivets you have to remove to dump the stock coil buckets if you change buckets. Which, by the way, check out the 78/79 bronco and 4wd F-10 coil buckets. They are small & simple without a built in shock hoop. Great for a start on a custom shock setup. I have a set here I grabbed to hang onto for when I got to my next build.

oh, and if you are going to go 4" it might be worth while to just keep your eyes on CL and some desert classifieds for a used autofab kit. For some inspiration, here's a 4" autofab kit with 35's. Stock rear.

well i broke down the cost of buying coils and building the thing out. i almost pulled the trigger on some 4wd coils for a bronco, but decided to reach out to FOA and see what some Coilovers would cost loaded ready to run. I pulled the trigger on the coilovers last night. it was only $150-$200 more than going with a coil bucket and a decent shock. plus they threw in some limit straps and other goodies with the deal. so right now i will be removing the coil bucket and building a simple mount for it. something similar to this and hopefully fitting a 35 on a stock fender, unles si come upon some front fenders really cheap. in the lon run i may do a 4wd swap in this so the Coilovers made much more sense long term.

Maybe.. But i notice most guys want the cleanest truck, then want to cut it up..

is it were rusty they wouldn't want to start with it.. lol

I think he was talking about the REST of the truck. You could have easily found a veeeeeeery clean cab for about $45-95k less than the guy was asking for that black crew. Oh well, not my $$.

Brian - is there a build for that truck on RDC? Where did you see those pics?

Edzackery, Waste of money to cut that hing up. Could have found a decent cab and gone from there. Even the frame was painted really nice on that thing. To Me, the goal of building something like that is to put more cool old iron back on the road, Cannibalizing an all ready clean build is not helping to keep old iron alive.

I'll agree that it's ashame to cut up that nice if truck, it saves tons of time and money that starting over. Not only time but financially way better option.

I'll agree that it is a shame to cut up that nice of truck but it does save a ton of time and money verses starting over. Timeline and financially a much better option.

Also just about everything on that truck that was taken off is bolt on. That can be sold for cash towards the rehab. Anyway you look at it starting from stock is the least efficient way to build a truck. The only good thing about it is being able to build it the way you want and even that changes for most of us over time.

Thanks. I had forgotten I'd seen the few pics they've put up on the crew in the past. On a side note - that suburban in their build links is RAD!

Yeah that's Compadre Trail. We crossed at Tecate Friday Morning and took Compadre Trail out to the 3 and and took a trail out there. Afterwards we went to Mike's Sky Ranch for the night. The next morning we left and went towards Rancho Coyote and then to the coast. Once we reached the coast we drove north in the coast line and stopped off at Coyote Cal's for some lunch. Once lunch was done we headed back up be coast to Ensenada the went inland and stayed the night at Horsepower Ranch. The next morning we took compadre trail back to Tecate and then went home. It was a great weekend
