Quick beam crack question

Post by Agilt »

Bought a set of beams to use as cores to send off, cleaning them up I found that the ear that bolts to the side of the D44 case has a crack in it. Searched and couldn't find reference to this type of crack, since it seems kind of an odd place. No other damage that I can find

Anyone seen that before? Any issues grinding it out and welding it up before sending it off? Or is this something the shops fix when they get cores in?

If it's a core, I would leave it. If it's for you, drill the end, grind and weld it.

x2. Anyone who needs beams lying around as cores should be able to fix that drunk and blindfolded.

Yes. Anyone that receives cores like that should be able to fix it, but that doesn't mean they're going to do it for free. Call them up. Send the same photos and ask if you should fix it or send in as-is.

That's a 10 minute fix if whoever is fixing it allows employees to smoke in the shop, 9min if there's outlets close by and nobody has to roll out extension cords, 8min if the welder is ready to go.

Agreed, it's not like it's a break caliper where it's gonna get stripped of parts, go through a hot tank in a cage with six hundred other cores, and some illiterate guy a few countries south is gonna slap in a new piston and O-rings and if there's some stripped threads nobody's gonna fix it and therefore the core is no good. Someone's gonna take the time to do a lot of fab work to that beam and having to also fix a crack adds a negligible amount of extra work.

My simple point was to say - if your beam builder adds $1 to the bill I'd find another builder as that's zero effort especially if the beams are getting widened or getting a simple c&t.

The way I look at it is, someone is going to pay for those supposed 15 minutes. If a fabricator or shop is financially sound, they don't work for free. So, they're either going to take the cost of repairing damaged cores, average it out and add it to all modified axle-housings (in this case) sold. Or, they're going to only bill the person that brings a damaged core, which seems fair to me.

My point is, I don't expect anyone to work for free, so if I turn in a damaged core, I'm perfectly OK with being charged for the repair.

Any shop that wants to stay in business needs to charge a minimum 1 hour labor charge. Even if it is a 15 minute job. Setup and cleanup are part of the job and not many, if any profession charges buy the minute, maybe lap dancers, not sure on that one....

It is fair the get paid for your work.

Yes although it may just take 15-20 mins to repair you still have to account for that time. Sometimes if you spend enough money with a company they will knock stuff out like that for you but not always. Look at it this way most fab shops are $80+ hr so if it takes 5 mins to get a drill and bit and drill a hole and another 5 mins to prep the crack and another 5 mins to weld and then another 5 mins to grind and sand smooth well now you are 20 mins in. now the employee needs to clean up. This is why a lot of shops have a minimum like 1 hour so it is worth their time. As an employer work force is not free, As a business owner tools and consumables are not free. If you guys find a successful shop that does free work let us all know lol. Every now and then I will get the friend that needs a favor real quick like drill a hole or weld a tab and what I tend to do is say buy lunch or whatever or give my guy some cash.
