There are supposed to be signs and notes on all the race related paperwork too. I hope people are aware of the dangers that AC and DC high voltage lines create.

Yeah, especially if the power is 69kv (69,000 volts) thats basically a deep roasted turkey instantly...

Darn, was counting on the arcing for my wake up call...haha. Good heads up, but flagpoles not THAT tall and it's fiberglass as well which shouldn't conduct. However, when it comes to radio antennas, I know an arc can jump quite a ways. Anyone know just how far an arc can jump, understanding the many variables?

Depends. I know that when we measure the power lines, if the hot stick (fiberglass measuring stick it retracts) is dirty or been used for a long time, it can generate one hell of an arc. Depending on where your at, I think thats NESC (national electrical safety code) it has to be at least 25 to 30 feet off the ground at a verry low minimum. If its the big transmission towers, dont worry about it. The clearance is over 75 ft but if your close thats either 250 kv or 500 kv which would do more than roast you on the spot.

Those power lines are serious stuff! Unfortunately, there is a large power line corridor that runs right through the pit area at Primm, so somebody will always get stuck with a pit there. I know that most cranes say at least 10 feet clearance, but I am not sure what voltage that is. I would use 30 feet as good personal minimum. Even if that flag pole is fiberglass, unless it has recently been tested, you have to assume it is conductive. Utility hot sticks, rope and tools are tested regularly and must be destroyed if they don't pass. Riding around in the truck or even dust and dirt will cause them to become conductive enough to fail testing. It only takes a few milliamps of AC current to mess up your heart (along with a long series of just the right conditions), so its best to treat those lines with tons of respect! As far as an arc, once started, 250 and 500 kV conductors will pull arcs 10 or 20 feet long. It has to be much closer than that to get it started though. I have seen a video of the big substation over by Boulder City with some big arcs. I have also personally seen 3+ foot arcs opening switches on a 115 kV line. Its spooky!

Have you seen the videos of the guys working on the 500 kv lines while the lines are still live? they dont throw an arc its a dang bolt. They wear special suits. Pretty cool to watch though

Ill be there Friday for tech and then spectating Sat for the slower classes. Hope to be there super early since I have welding class at 1. Sucks cause thats when all the fast stuff starts. O well. Just look for the teal and white bronco. And yes. I said TEAL!!!

Just left the race. Spectating is no bueno as everything is now fenced off. That is the price we pay to keep our sport safe. Saw Moss, sounded and looked strong as always. That is all.
