Anyone up for a GORUCK Challenge?
In October, last year, Bondobob and I took part in a GORUCK Challeng. It was, by far, the hardest and most rewarding thing I've ever done and I'm doing it again. What is it? Well, it's similar to a Tough Mudder or Spartan race, except more difficult and absolutely NOT a race and NOT and individual event. It is a TEAM effort. GORUCK describes it as, "a slice of Special Operations training where - from start to finish -- a Special Operations Cadre challenges, teaches, and inspires your small team to do more than you ever thought possible."
I've signed up for the Challenge in SLO on April 17 and am considering the "Light" the next morning which is basically half of a GORUCK Challenge.
I don't know if anyone here is even remotely interested but I figured I'd post to see. As of now I have signed up alone. If someone I know shows up with me, that would be fantastic. If not, I'm happy to show up alone and make a bunch of new friends on the spot.
This post is probably a little late as people would probably like a little more prep time but the truth is, if the desire is there, 10 weeks is plenty of time to prep.
If this sounds like something you're interested, post here or send me a PM or email. If you want my phone #, just say the word. And, please, don't put limits on yourself. It's easy to say I'm too old, too fat, too... whatever, but all that is BS and nothing but excuses. Yes, this would be easier (physically) if we were in our twenties but often times, the mental fortitude of a 20 year old simply cannot keep up with his body and when it comes to pushing yourself to and beyond your limit, it's the mind that does the work, the body is just along for the ride.
Anyway, if anyone is up for some good livin', let me know.

I would go,but I am afraid I am too far away.
I do monthly training with a group of patriots, we do some ruck adventures in the mountains 3 or 4 times a year. It's good to keep learning new skills and stay in good shape!

Good for you! That sounds fun. I've never done any backpacking but the family and I are planning to do a few days on the John Muir Trail with only what we can carry on our backs... should be interesting!Hauls Assington wrote:I do monthly training with a group of patriots, we do some ruck adventures in the mountains 3 or 4 times a year. It is too bad your not closer. It would be great to have you join us! BTW, There are several GORUCK events scheduled in Las Cruces. Tell your buddies about it. I bet they'd love it,

Good point. I just looked it up and since it's on Friday unfortunately it's a no go. When and where is the next one? If you were wanting to do a third.

They have them all the time and all over the U.S. and a handful outside of the U.S.dtbback wrote:Good point. I just looked it up and since it's on Friday unfortunately it's a no go. When and where is the next one? If you were wanting to do a third.

As for a third... we'll see.
Ay least one GFB member's interest was piqued by this post. For him (and those wondering what it takes, physically) to complete a challenge), here is the 6 week training program GORUCK recommends: https://t7979.mozu.com/cms/10317/files/ ... ekplan.pdf It's what I used to prep for it and I am alive and kicking.

Also, I don't give a $hi# about age and put no limits on myself because of it, but as of now, it appears at 37, I'll be the old man at this event. If I am, whatever. I'm IN! But, it would be nice to have at least one other old man to relate to!

I've done 2 Tough Mudders and have really enjoyed them. GORUCK seems right up my ally. Wish I could attend this one but I'm working all the OT I can to fund my build lol.

Yeah, backpacking is lots of fun! Just remember to slow down and take her easy out there, i have found that you need to spend a couple of hours winding down time to slow down from high speed city life, before you start your hike. When you get in a hurry, that is when you roll your ankle or worse. Strech out before you go and every time you stop. Pay attention to your surroundings/weather, plan ahead for water, and know when to call it a day and set up camp. For me it is all about relaxing, and getting away from all the bs of day to day life.

Good living!! I did it at 48... 12 hours and 20 miles rucking 70-100#'s is no joke(we all saw our spirit animals),however very doable, My right knee took 2-3 weeks before it felt like a hike was a good idea. Do it and you'll never regret it.

And, at 48, Rob absolutely killed it. Spirit animals... no doubt. I talked to mine for the last six miles.

Re: Anyone up for a GORUCK Challenge?
This is absolutely an addiction... doing things I said, with certainty, I would never do.
I said I'd never do a Heavy (24 hour event). I did. And followed that with a Challenge and then a Light... all back to back to back. An incredible experience that's hard to describe... miserable at times but felt like a blessing at others... I missed it and the team as soon as it was over.
GORUCK HCL... damn fine livin'.
