head light issues on 92' front end conversion

Post by kahuna bill »

Been having issues with head lights on my front end conversion

I converted to a 92' front end on a 91 truck. i'm running the original wire harness with a 92' bulb (sylvania part #9007)
with the 92' bulb my high beam indicator is always on. high and low can be selected, however, low is less bright than when i had the 91 bulbs (sylvania part # 9004)
I'm guessing this is because the 91 bronco headlight wire harness outputs 45 watts for low beam while the 92 wiring harness outputs 55 watts for low beam?
high beam output for both years is 65 watts and i do not notice any difference in brightness.
am i correct for assuming this is the issue with low beam being so dim? can i correct it without running in high beam all the time (like i've been doing)?
why won't my high beam light go off when i'm not running in high beam mode?

also, has anyone modified their 87'-91' wire harness to accept the additional lights that are found on the 92' front end? i think the only difference is that the running lights are now separate from the turn indicator lights?

and lastly i want to upgrade to HID head lights in the near future. projectors if the price is right. am i going to run into issues with my wire harness and the swap to HIDs?
I remember looking at bajahid.com a few years back for info, but i tried to open up the link again and the site's not what i remembered... tcm glx you're still operational right?

thanks guys

Billy

Sounds to me like the pin-out for the headlight sockets are different between the 9007 and 9004 (there are 3 wires: ground, 12V for low beam and 12V for high beam). You should be able to fix it by pulling the connector from the socket and placing in correct location or you could just buy the HID conversion now (for the 91 harness) and make life easier.

I'll try to look at the wiring diagrams later to confirm.

if i got the HID conversion for the 91 harness wouldn't the bulbs not fit into the 92' headlights?

Andy is spot on.....you 91 is pinned out for a 9004 and you are now running 9007. If you have a HID harness, you need to change the sequence of the onus to correct. easy fix, and very common on swaps.

thanks for the info.
I don't have the HID but it looks like i'll have to get one sooner just to avoid the head aches.

As stated you have to minipulate the 3 wire pinout on the HID harness anyway, so you might as well do it now and fix your problem and upgrade in one shot. If that doesn't make sense it will become apparent when you install the kit. Or if you google DDM HID install for bronco there is a thread that expains it. Basically swap wires till it works correctly. Also on the note of your lights being dimmer, atleast in case of the DDM kit it uses one factory headlight plug simply as a turn on reference wire for it's own relay, so it won't be a problem. Not to mention the HID provides much more light anyway. Side note, I know Tonys stuff is very good quality but I've installed over 15 DDM kits for my friends in school and Ect and haven't had a single problem. I'm sure Tonys is higher qaulity however and you'll be happy ether way.

I'm bittig the bullet and converting to HID. Buying a set from tony. It does seem like an easier answer to my problem. And like you said, it'll be way brighter.
Thanks guys for the help and advise.
