Pulled a 9 in. housing and 3rd member at the junkyard today since it was half off and my brother needed a rear end for one of his projects too.

Well, here's a plot twist. I bought it.
Cliff notes:

My '69 f250 Cummins tagged as gross polluter for blowing smoke up a hill.
In need of a new daily driver STAT as i'm borrowing a buddy's truck
How about the OJ bronco in the sideyard.... it only needs a thousand hours of work... sounds like an awesome plan!

Went straight to the sideyard with a battery and tire chuck after work and got the big girl out of the sideyard and into the driveway. Unburied it of leaves, wiped it down, gave it a floss job, swapped the 37's on for now, and fought the rats in the shed for several wheel burrow loads of parts to put this thing back together.
Also mounted the hood hinges and fiberglass hood, and started on the fenders. Located a new PS pump, box, lower valance, complete dash, temporary seats to bolt in, and more from a buddy's 95 parts truck as well.
Smooth sailing so far...

I was thinking the same thing steve! I thought Pre-75 smog excemt on top of pre 97 diesel.

Was it a CHP that gave you the ticket?

I wonder if some Hippie from LA was on vacation up in the sticks, saw the smoke & called someone to complain and supplied an LP # or something... haha

I think what the state actually wants is the pre smog stuff is supposed to stay as stock & keep all the original smog equipment (if any) that came on the truck/car there, they just do not test the vehicles that old. We all know everybody changes stuff out, modifies, engine swaps, etc. etc. on these pre smog vehicles, but I'm sure the man frowns on that.

The Fummins is registered as a F100 1/2 ton. Pre Cali rules that motor isn't legal in a 1/2 ton, only 3/4 ton and up. The gross polluter thing was because it was smoking up a hill and the officer felt he needed to write a ticket for it when he figured out it wasn't a gas vehicle. I, myself would fight it but I don't think Trevor will. The referee wrote that it needs the OEM engine installed.

& you say "the referee wrote" - so he's been to a BAR ref on it already I guess?

Didn't know he had the thing registered as an F100. If the truck is an F-250 then he may have a chance of fighting it, but it would be an uphill battle for sure knowing it's been registered as something else. Plus once the smog nazi's get involved he's probably on board for having to go through the hoops for a BAR ref. to get the cummin's OKed. In which case that in itself might be a pain.

This is Ryan (trevor's brother, whom has the race truck, fummins, and now the bronco) just for the record.

Plan is to file lost title on the f250 4x4 chassis i've got under the truck and bring that registration back up, so everything is 100% legit. If that doesn't work, i'll do it my way.
It was a local PD whom was having a VERY bad day it seems. It's a long story, but i wish i recorded him.

Oh well atleast it'll be registered more accurately when it comes back out of the sideyard, and the whole deal triggered bringing this bronco to life.
And I get a sweet stylin' daily driver.



Spent all evening mounting the front fenders, sanding both fenders and hood to fit the best i can get them to, and cleaned up the rear interior panels to get them installed incase i can't get them in after welding the cage tubes in.

Tomorrow evening's agenda is cage work near dash area so i can start getting the dash area all assembled again ASAP.

I will be placing the dash bar behind the dash. I've yet to research what this takes and how to retain everything (A/C, heater... everything else..) but any input would be great.
Just eyeballing the stripped cab it looks like a piece of 1 1/2 with 20 bends in it tucked right under the dash mounting lip just below the windshield wouldn't interfere with a thing, and would give a nice tucked (to the windshield) windshield /\. Only downside is obviously the undersized tube, but i'm not worried as this bronco will never be raced. I may even be able to do 1 3/4 there.
Also, the "engine cage" will not be tied into the cab cage. This is a simple mild build, and i don't want to deal with trying to figure out how to send 4 tubes through the cowl while retaining wipers. A beefy stand alone engine cage will be built for some 2.5 14" king coilovers i have laying around.

Basically what i'm thinking, although more tucked under the dash mounting lip. This is a ranger.
Thinking i should be able to do 1 3/4... maybe even 2?? Someone must know!
Luckily i have the whole dash out of the bronco to mock up with, and an entire replacement dash coming my way for final install

haha, 20 bends was an exaggeration (Clearly), likely more like 5 or so.

Still, 5 bends on the regular bender is cheaper than buying yet another tool...

Before you get too far along you may want to consider a 2 piece design so it's removable for easy welding and painting. I did a section behind the dash and from there back as a seperate structure. That way you remove the top and slide it out for finish weld and paint. After reinstall just the joints remain for touch up paint.

No good progress pictures other than this shot i took while driving it around the court to turn it around in the driveway.

Dash spreader, roof spreader, windshield /\, and the 3 roof tubes are all in. Everything is extremely tucked. Cut the additional layers out of the back of the cab roof even. Going to have to modify the shell seal. Big PITA but happy with how tucked away all tubes are so far. Maximum head room as possible as my 6' 10" dad and 6' 8" brother will likely be driving it quite a bit chasing for me.

I disassembled the dash and did a lot of mock-up. There's no way to run a dash tube while keeping the entire black section of the dash (a/c / heat ducts), so i threw the entire black section in the garbage, and am left with the factory dash "shell". I tucked the dash bar just under the dash mounting lip under the windshield.
The dash shell will be mounted off those tabs, along with several other mounts off the cage. I will build shrouds for the heat/a/c box and run my own ducts. Mounting the steering column off the cage as well.
Then pulled another dash as i cut up the one i had for the mock-up. second dash will have cleaner cuts. Pieced all the best parts from the two dash's to make a decent dash.
Then i headed to the junkyard with high hopes of finding clean carpet, and scored big. Found a bronco that actually had nice carpet, and snagged it along with many other parts. Full interior will be going back in.

Investigated the 351w running rough, hesitation and blowing smoke... may need a new 351w.

Checked the gears. 3.55. Scrapping the 8.8 and building a 9" now.

Will be taking the bronco to Fallon NV to pre-run and chase for a couple buddies racing the VORRA desert race, labor day weekend. Sure have a long to-do list though!!!
