Baja 1000 bound - Anejo

Post by agavelouis »

Well, after many years it is time for me to have a dedicated vehicle to prerun Mexico with. I know, I know, the struggle is real.

Picked up the '94 for stupid cheap out here in Phoenix from a younger kid. He moved here from Utah after about a year up there. He liked to play in the snow/ mud, which is quite obvious as I am now on my 5-6th trip to the coin wash trying to get the red clay out from everywhere. He had the Bronc for about a year and a half, and surprisingly enough, before him, someone looks to have taken care of it for the most part. He had some issues with it, including a plugged cat at some point as it and the muffler had been removed, a failed fan clutch which resulted in a new fan clutch that the bolts backed out of and put the fan through the radiator. A bad cv joint on the drive shaft which created a death shudder was fun too.

After replacing the radiator, fan (flex-a-lite), solid mounting fan to water pump, AZ Drive shaft love on the rear unit and a little elbow grease I had a running, driving Bronco for under $1,300. Schaweet. 302 isn't my first choice, but it will keep everything nice and slow hopefully.

I went with Solo Motorsports for the suspension, as I had a couple barriers that I was up against. I wanted to keep stock width for budget, and trails here in AZ. Their c&t beams, along with radius arms seems to be a pretty solid front setup. I did opt for the monoball inner pivots for longevity and strength. The beams paired with the coil engine cage looked to be a perfect fit for my application.

Rear I went with their underbed mounts and Fox 3 tube bypass' sitting atop the Q80 Deavers.

I am regearing to 4.88 to help the tired 302, and to get the thing up on top of hills a little better than the 4.56's.

I went with General Grabber 35's and Method Double standards. Nice beadlock look, but none of the hassles as this will be a DD for me too.

This build will be pretty quick I hope, need to get it rock solid for Mexico in November. Braaap

Yeah Louis. You use two of my favorite words Baja and Anejo, then tease us with the description and offer no pictures?

At least your body was red red, I'm not sure I'm liking the maroon too much.

The red one died on a cold wet morning.

I still have the roller 351W bottom end from that Bronco if you want it Louis. Not that it's needed. My little 302 has never had a problem pushing my Bronco around.

I ran my Bronco for 20 years with a well massaged 302 with all the goodies, like a mild cam, JBA headers, intake and mild port on heads. Did great for more than a 100k in the dirt and even another 100k in Baja. Rebuilt motor 15 rears ago and have a total of 342k on Bronco OD.

Still runs but lifter making noise and the 408ci is going after bumper to bumper cage is done. In the middle of a frame up rebuild.

I might replace the lifter and save the motor for a future toy.

Took her out the other day to stretch her legs. Been inside the garage for far too long!

Still have some rear suspension work to do, but we are on the homeward stretch.
