Re: Going wider
Ok, so my thinking is you get better u joint angles and thus better life of the joint's at the same 18-20" of travel. That being said the width I am thinking of for my 86 Bronco is 3 per side to match the rear axle of a full floater Dana 60 or maybe a lighter Full floater 9" of the same width around 70". I am thinking of the Dana 60 at first and in the future maybe a fabricated FF 9".

Re: Going wider
I will not be going wider or stretch in my Bronco. Stock width is fine but... I will probably do a 3.5-inch wider TTB swap into my '71 GMC C25 and very likely link the rear. No smog needed so I can go big on the power and the longer wheelbase will allow me to do an Np203/NP205 doubler setup so I can also crawl it around too.
Maybe what you need is a new project vehicle to mess with. Something like a Baja Bug maybe...?

Re: Going wider
RCV's axles would probably fix the u Joint angle issue in the stock cut turn beam set up ......so yes stretch would be next step and improve your travel numbers in the rear to improve over all performance
I m just saying

Re: Going wider
For my project, if I link the Bronco, then The stretch is on with the F150 bedsides maybe 120-125" we shall see when that day comes.
Re: Going wider
Ok so I am late to the party but here is my two cents on wider than stock, don't waste your money. After driving my first Bronco stock width and now a widened one I can say I really don't notice a big difference. I am widening the rear but only because the front was already done. I am used to driving and picking lines for my long travel car so a few inches wider in the Bronco has not been an issue yet. As far as stretching one that really has me confused and I don't care how it's done I don't like the look. The whole attraction for me to a Bronco came from having a Jeep rock crawler and a long travel car, The Bronco allows me to bounce back and forth between both worlds and so far I love it. If I wanted a longer wheelbase I would have bought a different vehicle.

Re: Going wider
I was all hot and heavy to stretch mine at one point but I have come to the same conclusion as you. The only broncos that I have seen that are streched are total money dumps and I think most of our modest budgets wouldnt allow for the supporting mods to maximize the gain from a stretch.donncdrc wrote: If I wanted a longer wheelbase I would have bought a different vehicle.

Re: Going wider
Good conversation guys.
One thing I would not do is begin to build another rig for the same purpose. The question was posed more geared around the next set of BIG upgrades to plan and budget for. And by no means am I convinced that is what is next. Simply the question being posed.
My honest conclusion, take some money and buy a used 1997-2003 2wd f150 to use for simple non off roadish type trips. Think going to BITD races, San Felipe with the family, Parker 425 all where prerunning or wheeling do not factor in. I'll throw a race radio, GPS, killer sound system with TVs for the girls and boom.
Anyways, carry on.

that sounds like a good idea if this is becoming something less family friendly
might be best to get something for a tow rig/family suttle

Re: Going wider
Interesting take on not building two of the same kinds of vehicles Tony.
Now I'm starting to wonder wether my '71 GMC might just need a Dana 60 front and a set of 40's.
One idea a friend tossed out the other day was buying a set of Rockwells and putting 52 inch tires on it. Though cool, this would suck for storage because something tells me Rockwells aren't really street legal with full hydro steering.
An F150 would be a cool Prerunner you could put around in but what if you went back over to the Jeep side and just bought a JK that doesn't need anything to be fun for the most part.

Re: Going wider
One thing to keep in mind as mentioned before, the beauty of your Bronco is that its a sleeper and a clean one at that and it handles like a dream in the tough so why mess with your signiture trademark?
If you did buy a '97-'01 F-150, would it eventually evolve into a go-fast build?

Re: Going wider
Rockwells!! Do it!!!!
A JK would be cool Auggie, but a 97-03 f150 would be 5-7k. A JK would not. I would not build that truck to be a prerunner, simply a cruiser than can be driven on dirt roads without any issues. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love my Bronco but there are instances where it isn't what makes lost sense to drive.
Parker and the Mint come to mind as perfect examples. It's a 4 hr highway drive to either of those races and if your not going to prerun, you don't end up needing a prerunner.

I think the issue is Tony like many if not all of us could never just leave anything alone haha. Hence wanting to change something that has already been a basis of much comaprison on the site. Tony's rig is the go to when arguing the value of stock width. There is nothing wrong with "next step" sickness, I think its just part of the hobby.Agui-E7TE wrote: doesn't need anything to be fun for the most part.
I think it would be really cool if you went wider but only maxed out the fenders you have. Otter, and Mikey did +2 and its seamed to tuck nicely then you good go +2 down the road eventually in the rear and pull the bedsides. I would start with your stock beams and wheel tire combo and keep adding wheel spacers, start with a 2" then add in .25 increments, and cycling until you find the max width you can go and still cycle clean. Then build the beams off that. Add single swing steering and your on a whole new level.

Oh great, another option!! Thanks a lot. Hahahaha
And yes, I resemble the remark about the sickness. Did I mention my wife's minivan has a system and 19's.

Re: Going wider
How about a 4 cylinder YJ then? Hell even a 4.0 is good. The best part is when the modification bug bites you on it, you can build it into a 4-door Wrangler. Can't be much harder than a stretch Bronco.
As far as the Rockwells go, the idea is growing on me but don't be putting bad thoughts in my head.

You would need long bed bedsides. Ask me how I know!Wrightracing.net wrote:For my project, if I link the Bronco, then The stretch is on with the F150 bedsides maybe 120-125" we shall see when that day comes.

Re: Going wider
What wheelbase can you get with short bedsides?
