Mild DD 1982 F150 flareside build

1982 F150 flareside 4x4. It had a 302 v8 mated to a C6 trans.

I originally bought the truck to part out and make some money. People liked the truck but didn't want to buy the whole thing so I sold the axles. A TTB with the bolt in axle and a 9" with limited slip. Really all the truck needed to run again was another motor. The one it had had been scavenged for parts.

So after sitting on it I came across a 95 bronco with a 5.8 online that had most everything but the interior. A terrible idea creeped into my mind. Before I knew it a deal was made and I was driving up to running springs to pick up the bronco for $450. Now it's been sitting in my driveway for a few months.

The idea was to use the 5.8 motor and e4od trans. Essentially I wanted all the new stuff with the look of the old body. The bed on this flareside was just too cool to not use. Fiberglass fenders and a wood planked bed.

Unfortunately the ecu was missing aswell as the dash in the donor bronco. Not a big deal except this ecu was specific to the California 95 obd1 mass air 5.8. Good grief. I priced them out and was looking at around $350 to replace just the ecu.

I found a cab online off of a 92-96 F150 with all the interior minus the seats. I traded a $150 Home Depot gift card for it. The plan was to use the cab and title. It turned out to be a 95 cab with would work perfectly with the 95 motor to smog. The guy said it had the 5.8 and luckily the ecu was still in the cab. Oh man. So lucky. Also had a new stereo and new speakers. Well worth the gift card!

Slowly I've been pulling parts off and selling other parts.
I sold:
Cab
Engine
Transmission/xfer case
Axles

I saved:
Frame
Bed
Front clip

So right now it is all the way down to the bare frame and it should be back from the sand blasters next week.

It's wild how flexi these frames are. I could lift one corner a good 6"-8". I wonder if I should box in the frame a bit.

I'm still deciding if I want to just put in deaver coils in the front with c/t beams and modify the bucket for some longer 2.5" shocks or just spend the money and put in coilovers.

Also deciding on if I should run 33" or 35" tires on 15" rims. I have 4.10 gears that I would run with the 35s.

I have a set of raptor take offs that I picked up super cheap. Like $250 and they are in good condition but need a rebuild.

Hollander has some SWP towers, beams and arms...just saying

Also, 35s on some Outlaw IIs .... gold center if you want to go extra old school

He's suppose to be cutting up my beams that I dropped off haha. I don't have a problem making an engine cage it just $$$ for a set of coilovers and I would want to go with fox to match the rear raptor shocks which is a bit more.

I have some brand new Procomp 4" coils and FOA 2.5x10s front and rear perfect for this project I will let go cheap. I even have a set of the factory outlaw II style wheels if interested

Got the frame back and primed it before it had a chance to rust.

Planning on panting it a semigloss black.
Hopefully I get my suspension back soon to install @hollandermotorsports haha.

Liking it. Looking forward to seeing your progress. I think the 5.8 will get that thing moving nicely.
Since you're updating the cab, what's the trucks radio bezel looking like. The kids is all cut up.

The old cab is long gone. I would have given you w/e you wanted from it if you were a few months earlier. I gave the cab away for free. It was a greenish jade color interior. I think I only have the glove box door left. I see the 80s trucks at the pick a part all the time of you need any parts. Let me know.

Primed and Painted the frame with that oil based rustoleum. Thinned it with acetone enough to spray out of a gun. I wasn't expecting much with a $10 harbor freight spray gun but it didn't come out too bad. And I don't have to worry a ton about cleaning all the oil based paint out of the gun so much. I went for a textured look to hide any imperfections. The frames on these things are not the flattest. It came out looking like it was powdercoated with that slightly textured coating.

Painted the rear axle too

Once you thinned out that rustoleum paint enough it actually did lay down smooth. I went over it again with a mist to give it the textured look.

Make sure to use the professional grade rustoleum if you do. It will last a lot longer, especially in the sun. Even in rattle can form. I've found the best selection at lowes. They have just about every color in professional grade and its maybe a dollar more a can but way worth it.
