FORD FRAME PAINTING QUESTION

Post by robjs111 »

Anybody know if Ford coats there frames from the factory? Using POR 15 on a 2001 Ford frame and after using a chemical stripper and wire wheel there still remains a black like coating. The only method of removal that I found was to be grind off.
Thanks.

Yes, it's an anti corrosive to keep rust to a minimum. It's more grease like than paint. It's designed to not come off.

It is thick as hell and on my end it is coming off with a wire wheel but it takes some work to get it off.

Worst case scenario most media blasters will blast your frame for about $150.00 if you are willing to pay for it.

I couldn't get any chemicals to take it off, it only came off with a grinder or sandblasting. At the same time, wherever that stuff was there was no rust. So maybe try a test paint right over it?

Painting over it looks like crap...ask me how I know.

I haven't done a FSB frame but I have used a wire wheel to clean frames/under carriages/stuff-- just a tip from my last summer-- I am in AZ so its hot as hell but I did it this way anyway-- where a thin long sleeved shirt and your worst jeans and a pair of welding gloves. The sleeves are because you are literally going to look like a coal miner when you are done-- completely filthy! Get a 4" grinder and a variety of wire wheels and cup brushes from Harbor Freight--they are about $5 each from HF and I cant tell the life difference from the DeWalt from Lowes myself. You need the variety-- some big, and some small wire wheels for a die grinder to get into the corners. Eye protection is a must and I would advise a face shield as the little wires are painful when they come loose! The welding gloves honestly are because the grinder does get hot after hours of use-- also helps the vibrations. If you really do a excellent job with all the frame and axles its a FULL weekend job. Personally if a sandblaster will do the work for $150 its gonna cost you $50 in supplies anyway-- I would have them do it :-)
