Been a long time since I rock and rolled!! Haha! Feels good to make stuff again. Not much to show, because I haven't had time to work on it, but got a good start on the swinger mount. Should make some good progress this weekend.

No break. Only a sledge hammer!

Fabbed a couple of tabs for the knuckles. Will tack on a gusset tomorrow, then fit the SS Fab backing plates. Should be here soon. It's looking like I'll have to preheat these in the oven for welding. Haha!

Every time I preheat something in the oven, the kitchen smells a little like the corner garage!

Hey B,
Did you drill/ream and sleeve the steering arm off the steering knuckle to fit the ½in bolt? Your fab work looks nice and clean... well done!

Thanks Tom. Well...I drilled and reamed. Decided to just go with a 3/4" bolt rather than sleeve. You see any issues with that?

super slick... do you really preheat in the oven? can same thing be acheived with an oxy ace torch?

I have used torches in the past with success. Ovens are easier though. Just don't heat a cast part too fast or just in one spot... You will get cracks.

Hey B,
No, I think it's going to work really well. What I've done is drill out to 7/8" and then press in a 7/8" bushing stock and then ream to size... but I wanted to go with a ½" bolt so it was really just a sizing issue. You should have no problems with that ¾" bolt in there! You still have plenty of meat on the steering arm.

Better in the oven as it's an even heat throughout the part rather than one spot where you left the torch too long.

From my experience, the other thing that will cause cracks is dissimilar cooling... so avoid drafts that will cool the part as you are working on it and then after welding is complete. I like to make sure the part cools verrrrry slowly by applying heat evenly and sparingly to keep the part from cooling too fast. Just another 2¢!

It can't possibly be any worse than the time I cured a wrinkle finished valve cover in the oven!

Ugh... did that too, except it was black radiant paint on my cylinders for my race bike (very long time ago!) That was so baaaaad!
