Auto Hub Removal

Hello All,
I was wondering if there is a super great technique or sexy tool to help get the snap ring out of the hub to remove the auto locking hub. Just a almost nightmare to get that snap right out and I am hoping for for a tip or two!

Try a seal pick, or scriber to lift it enough to grab with needle nose pliers.

Cheap dental picks or very small flat head screwdrivers.

Most important tool for pulling the snap ring is patience.

I have a cheapo set of pics I use. Good picks are better but the Harbor Freight stuff usually gets the job done.

Sometimes they're a pain but keep at it. It'll come out. Maybe use a second pick to keep the ring from spinning?

Use two picks or a curved pick and a small screwdriver. The screw driver is there to stop the snap ring from rotating while you work the pick under the other end. Also, make sure fuse (internal hub piece) is not up or touching the snap ring.

I used a 3 or 3.5 inch round wire nail (regular nail found in any garage) and I bent the first 3/4 in. of the nail at a 20 to 30 degree angle on the table vise. I ground the edges down to a smaller thickness with a sharp end and it was perfect. It got the snap ring out really quick.

Of course I've used those Dental picks to remove it before and since I didn't have one available I fashioned it out of a regular nail.

This job took me a while also, then I put a little pressure on the internal hub piece with a puller & it pressed in about 1/8" taking pressure off the snap ring which helped a bunch...
