Shane's 84 Bronco

Post by shaner17 »

Hey guys been awhile since I posted, my son Machlin was born last month so the last year and next 18+ I've been/will working my ass off, but still make time for the bronco.

This Bronco has been in our family since my dad bought it from ford in 1984, mainly to tow our motorcyles down to our house in San Felipe. Then when I turned 16 back in 2000 it was my first vechical, which was awesome since I learned how to drive in it down in baja when i was 8 years old. I beat the crap out of this Bronco but always got me home when I lived in Santa Cruz i would take it to Tahoe, Hollister Hill, Pismo etc... started building after I moved down here.

Havent taken many new pics so here you old adding all the old one's too(slow ride at work) Got a new canon t1i "for the baby" so Ill get some video and photos when I go up and see it at the fab shop next week. Finally getting 4wd!

Recently I have:

Rebuilt 351w(stock) destroyed a rod playing down in Felipe early in the year
Rebuilt 9 inch and Giant truss with Currie N case and 4.88 gears spooled(soo much better than stock gears)

In the fab shop for:

rebuild TTB ball joints, wheel bearing etc...
lengthen axles
4.88's in front diff(open)
engine crossmember from shock tower to shock tower
fix small issues like lower bolts on radius arm to beam backing out
front off road light tabs on bumper
limit strap and bump pads all around
mounts for shovel, jack handle and mag lights
better tranny cooler mount and placement
mount cowl hood thingy

Should get back in the next couple weeks hoping to take down by the baja 250, pitting for a new 7s team

4wd again! Diff. rebuilt with new gears 4.88's to match the rear. Lengthened axles(need pics) bump pads front and rear and strapped. New Balljoints, u joints and superwinch locking hubs. Engine crossmember, light tabs and new trans. cooler mount. Also some mounts for mag lights, shovel, jack handle and ammo cans.

So much easier to get on the trailer in 4wd, just need to get the motor running without backfiring under load...and suggestions?Ive timed it but it backfires thru the muffler bad under a load...

Hmmm. have you looked to see if the distributor is 180 off?

"Ive timed it but it backfires thru the muffler bad under a load..."

Wires, coil or ignition module in the gm distributor. Those gm modules were prone to failure. I am unsure what module they (DUI) are running or if they are different with the low rev and high rev DUIs. How much initial are you running 12-16?

You might want to check the power coming into the distributor to ensure it is strong and constant.

A bad cam lobe, lifter or pushrod will do it too. Is it flat tappet? They can munch a lobe in a hurry during break in.

The Bronco is sweet.

That fan is hella dangerous.

I think it was 10 deg. btdc, the distributor was fine with the old motor possibly something happened to it. I may just take it in to a shop and get it done right. how about the carb? could it have gotten messed up after starting it 180 out?

How do you mean the fan is dangerous? been meaning to put a shroud on or go electric...

Thanks for the help!

The carb could of had the powervalve damaged if it is a holley style and had a large backfire through the intake. It will tear the diaphram which can be easily checked. I usually try to have a spare one laying around. It will burn rich at low revs with a bad valve. It could foul the plugs and backfire or backfire off an exhaust leak or similar hot spot.

The plugs might offer you some insight.

Make sure you dont have a lead wrong on the cap. I have had a simmiler problem, I was looking at the cap wrong and stuck 2 leads around wrong. Took a while to find, but it fixed the backfiring out the exhaust :P

Depending on Ford cam choice it is possible the firing order is different.

The plugs are black... Its about time to rebuild the holley so thats my plan this week. I also think I was a tooth off on the dist. so I fixed that on the timing I got a timing gun and set it to 10 and it will idle great but when I drive it, it backfires thru the exhaust and also poped thru the carb a couple times.

firing order 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 stock cam

Going to get some new plugs after I put the holley back together, Ive check the wires to many times, but once more wont hurt...really hope its not the valves or cam

Sounds like the carb. I had that problem with my 76 ranchero.

Did you disconnect the spout plug before you timed it?

Busted a u joint on the rear drive shaft after the first run, limped back to camp to get the spare thanks to the 4wd. Any recommendations on U joints? didnt have any problems the rest of the time. I slammed the rear pretty hard before the u joint blew.

Dana/spicer ujoints are the way to go. Napa is supposed to have them with blue dust seals, or you can get them from Ford. If you slammed the rear and the ujoint failed make sure the driveshaft has enough plunge.
