Front end vibration when front hubs are locked

Post by Ojb »

I have a vibration in my front end when the hubs are locked and the transfercase is in 2wd it goes away when I shift into 4wd or unlock the hubs. I have completely gone through the entire front end and think the problem may be an axle shaft out of balance or possible the Detroit truetrac that I have up front. Just wanted to see if anyone else has come across this before.

Yep. If the u-joints are clocked wrong you will get a smooth left right wobble in the steering wheel.

This video helps people understand the pulsation that is created from u-joints.

You need to make sure they are parallel. Same as a driveline.

They are clocked correctly. I marked them before I took anything apart.

How fast are you going when it vibrates?

The vibration starts around 25-30 mph. I plan on having both front axle shafts balanced when I have it apart for the coilover swap. I do think it's either the axles or the differential, just wondering if anyone else has come across this before.

It's just weird that it's there when you are in 2wd with hubs locked but it goes away when you are in 4wd with hubs locked. It might very well be a bad u joint or maybe the gears were not set up correctly in the third member.
