please help! 96 Bronco starts then dies?????
please help! 96 Bronco starts then dies?????
started my build a year ago. truck was running and driving fine when I started. put things back together and drove it for a couple days, maybey 30 minutes total. then one day she starts and dies after a minute or so. like the key just shut off. I check everything and find the pressure at the shrader valve a little low (20 lbs) and im sure its the fuel pump. new filter .. new fuel pump... clean tank... and the same happens. If I leave it for a few hours it runs perfect for about 45 seconds then dies. hit the key again and it runs perfect for 5 seconds then dies. in research it seems that this is when the computer is going from start mode to run mode. fuel pressure is 40lbs and holds there while engine dies, and holds that for hours. Did I mess up the computer somehow? the ignition control module? I did do the ABS delete and moved the speed control sensor to the back of the transfer case, but drove it since then and everything was fine. I have checked vacuum lines and I have no engine codes. Have heard a lot about the pick up on the distributor shaft... but that seems to be a no start issue (mine starts perfectly but dies) i have checked the fuel pressure regulator vacuum and found no fuel or smell.

Re: please help! 96 Bronco starts then dies?????
when the pip sensor in my distributor went, it would run fine for 20minutes on the way to work, then not restart, or run for 5 minutes then die at a stop light....
I posted this 30 minute ignition system check to help diagnose the issue

Re: please help! 96 Bronco starts then dies?????
I read the write up and that's good stuff. I will try that this week. BUT......... im going to get good spark cause the bronco starts every time, then dies, just a shorter run period each time. these test may show me a weak link however.
thanks
thanks

That's the way mine was, it was literally the most frustrating issue I've ever had with a vehicle, I was so ready to part my truck out I was getting so pissed
Re: please help! 96 Bronco starts then dies?????
My 96 just had a similar problem. Seemed like a fuel problem as it would only run at idle or low rpm no load and die randomly. Swapped in my old coil and ignition module on fenderwell and ran fine again. Traced it to the ignition coil. Did you check codes? MIne had ignition misfire codes.
Re: please help! 96 Bronco starts then dies?????
If you try another ignition module without bolting it in make sure and get a good ground to the body of it. It will get real hot without the heat sink so don't run it a long time like that.
Re: please help! 96 Bronco starts then dies?????
tested ingnition module and it tested fine. I cleaned the iac and it didn't change anything. I purchased a reman ecu for 140 bucs and it fixed the problem. I think it might have been all the welding on the truck I have been doing (sometimes battery disconnected others not).
while shopping around for parts I did find a new distributor, with cap and rotor for 85 bucs at Oriley. Not sure of its quality, but a good backup.
