Unless you are going wider in the front, don't get the econoline rear end. I'd say a 9" from a 78-86 bronco/f150. Although not all 80-86's had 9' rears.

THIS!!!

Plus Econolines are all 28 spline. If your staying stock width, do as Nick said.. 78-86 F150 or Bronco

The late 70s up f150/Broncos will have 31 spline axles and be a little wider than the early 70s back. They widened them in 73 (I believe) and switched to 31 splines around 75. I check for a limited slip by counter rotating the axles and feeling for resistance. I also look at the diff tag and count the revolutions of the pinion to figure the gear ratio.

I really don't care for the Econoline housing. It's not a HD housing like the trucks had. There are almost no useable parts out of the Econoline rear end either... it's got a weak case, tall gears, most were open (not LS), 28 spline axles, and drum brakes, small bearing ends.

When it's all said and done your better off just buying a fabricated housing. Then you get whatever width you want, good ends, and save time cleaning and trussing for about $500.

If stock width is ok, find yourself a 80-86 Bronco/F150 9". It's 31 spline, and will most likely have a limited slip. Gears are going to be 3.50 in 90% of them, and the case will snap on the pinion support after a while.

On the good side the housing is a HD style and it has the newer style big bearing ends.
