What's it like to shoot?
Re: The Gun Thread
I believe they are not CA legal it would be a Short Barrel Shot Gun (SBS)

Re: The Gun Thread
The gun I am looking at is the Smith & Wesson Silver Governor Revolver 45LC/410. My mom still has a house in AZ so if they are off roster we could get one. I was reading on Cal Guns and it is legal for a owner of a off roster gun to move to CA and register it. Plus, she could do a Private Party Sale without using a FFL because I am her son. Otherwise you can do a transfer through a FFL.
I don't know all the legal issues but the 2.5" 410 rounds are designated a hand gun round and not a shotgun round at least that is what it says on the box. I don't know how they would be any different than the 9mm buck shot rounds. But this is CA so they be outlawed now also.
I did see the Taurus 410 and it is cheaper, but from my experience with the Berretta 92f 9mm copy, they are not a bad company.
I am still not sure what we will get her. I was also looking at the Sig 22 for her. The light weight of the Sig or maybe a Springfield Amory X would be a good fit for my Mom.

Re: The Gun Thread
I have shot one of the 410 / 45 revolvers. It is a neat gun but pretty short range use is all you can expect. With shot shells point blank is about it if you want to stop a person. At 15 ft it will have about a 6ft spread and not penetrate stiff cardboard. Buckshot may be better but didn't try that. Works decent with 45 ammo but 30ft is when you will start missing fair sized targets. Some models have problems with the cylinder timing and getting jammed between holes. Took the owner of the one I shot a couple trips back to the factory to get it to work. Works great for snakes.
Re: The Gun Thread
Ruger SR22 have pretty good reviews.

If you could only have one of those three I would go with the p220r. LC9 is a little small and the M92 I don't know what it would be good for but make you look like a drug dealer or Serbian mafia?

Re: The Gun Thread
I didn't specify..
M92 is a truck pistol
Lc9 because the ammo is cheaper than a .45 and a ccw
Well everyone should have a .45 right?

Re: The Gun Thread
If you haven't checked out his firearm work, I suggest you do...it's pretty bad ass.
Like him or not, you can't deny the craftsmanship... Jesse James built a pair of 1911's for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie...
from his post on them.."So almost 5 years ago I decided I was done with California and especially Hollywood, and everything it was about. I came to Texas and reconnected to my passion for building things with my heart and hands. I took the my skills and knowledge of metal and started applying it to firearms. It is very special to me that some familiar faces from that past life recognized what I was doing and wanted to be part of it.
I built this custom pair of Cisco 1911's for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Both are Government size. Her's is chambered in 9mm and his in .45acp . Both are hand fit from all oversize parts, making them incredibly accurate, well shooting pistols.
Our engraver did some of his best work on both slides and grip panels. Her slide says "MAMA KNOWS BEST" and His says "BIG PAPA".
To finish them off my master woodworker friend Jason Bedre hand made a set of incredible presentation boxes.
Thank you so much Brad and Angie for trusting me with a project like this. I hope they bring you many years of enjoyment."

I have been doing IDPA and USPSA stuff for 15 years!SteveG wrote:As if I need another hobby or place to spend money....
A friend and I went to the SLOSA.org EXPO in SLO today. I didn't know what to expect but their website said free shooting so I figured it couldn't be all that bad. I was right! It was a great event. Plenty of free shooting to be had and and a little of everything. Including some IDPA and USPSA demos and shooting. I have LOTS of fleeting obsessions and latest crazes but this was damn fun and just might stick! Everyone working the event was super friendly, welcoming and eager to help. Best of all, they handed over loaded firearms and said, "go to town!" Next year, I plan to take the whole family to the Expo and make a day of it.
Some time in the next couple months, my buddy and I are going to give an IDPA or USPSA competition a try... looking forward to it!
Anyone here into shooting competitions?
Not too seriously but, I try to go when I get a chance. My favorite is 3 gun, and long range contests.

Re: The Gun Thread
Newbie question mainly for CA residents.
How does 3 gun work here in CA? I was watching a video of a northern California competition and the competitors seemed to be using 10+ round mags what seemed to be in both AR and pistol. Is that because you can own them but not sell, buy or manufacture?

Re: The Gun Thread
That law is not fully in effect as far as I know. And yes you can own them before it's in effect.

Re: The Gun Thread
With the weather preventing work on the truck, I've been playing with my Lee Enfields, rebuilding my GrandDad's #1 Mk3* and working on loads for the #4. I found 2 accurate loads using Aussie ADI powder, 2206H and 2208 and a Bertram Bullets (made an hour's drive from me) 158 gn soft point. Both are relatively mild (2300 odd FPS) but the performance on light game was quite impessive. I found that pushing the loadings made accuracy worse, so on the advice of my best mate, we slugged out both barrels to see what I had. The #1 has a Lithgow made heavy barrel shortened to 18.5" and slugged out at 0.3115", and the #4 slugged out at a WHOPPING 0.3165!!! The factory accepted dia. is meant to be 0.3125. The 158 gn SP mikes up at 0.311 to 0.3115, so its perfect for the short gun. However that meant that they were loose in the #4's oversize barrel, hence the reason accuracy suffered when my loading were increased. I suspected that the bullets weren't grabbing the lands when velocity was increased, and accuracy suffered. Enter the Bertram 156 gn SP. These are a superseded version, and miked up at 0.3145". Testing with ADI 2208 and increasing my load from 41.5 gns to 43 gns has resulted in 200 FPS more velocity and 1" groups 2" high at 100yds (perfect for a 200 yd zero). The best part is, I haven't made any adjustments yet to the scope.
I've loaded up 20 or so for next week's range day, to check and confirm their accuracy. AN interesting addition is that the 156 gn soft point is absolutely EXPLOSIVE on light and medium game. I mean, RPG explosive. So, after verifying their accuracy, etc. I plan a trip away for a weekend, hunting goats, pigs and paddock vermin.
Pic below, L to R: 156 gn 'RPG', 158 gn SP and 174 gn soft point, all from Bertram Bullets. The 158 SP has a flat tip, which makes them open up really good, their performance on roos with chest shots basicallly renders a fist size exit hole. On pigs, they go thru the smaller ones, and dont exit on the bigger ones, but I've never needed a second shot as the animal is usually dead on its feet and drops immediately. I'll post up some pics after the next trip.

Re: The Gun Thread
Forgot to add this. I was at the pistol club last weekend, keeping my attendance up for my licence application and watching the comp there, I got to fire about 150 rds out of one of these:
My first 20 rds were warm up, with 5 flyers outside the 10 ring at 10m, but after that, 130 rds at 5m, 10m and 25m, only one went out of the 10 ring, into the 8 at 12 o'clock. I gotta have one of these. The fit in my hand, ergonomics, etc. are spot on, superbly accurate and reliable. It swallowed 3 boxes of Federal JHP without a single jam or mis-feed. The importer fellow says he will do me a great deal, when I am ready to buy, so I put my name down for one.
Steyr S - A1 9mm Para (Steyr file picture, we arent allowed to take pics at the comp meets). OMFG!!!! I am in LOVE!!!! We are only allowed the 10 shot version here, but this is THE best handgun I have handled in a LONG time.

Re: The Gun Thread
That right there is almost my favorite carry gun. Super under rated and I would take one over a 911 or Glock any day. I have the M9-A1 version with a handcuff key lock built in. I think it is the same with a slightly longer barrel.AussieRod wrote:Steyr S - A1 9mm Para (Steyr file picture, we arent allowed to take pics at the comp meets). OMFG!!!! I am in LOVE!!!! How do you like the sights? I love them, I find myself on target before my mind has even figured out what the target is.

Re: The Gun Thread
Creaky digging the look of the new H&K P30. Like that it's 9mm and looks to be fairly low profile. Not a fan of Glock, and I'm not about to carry an M9 Beretta edc.
