Great story Rick, I feel honored to learn about him. Your Uncle John was a true American hero, it's men and women like him that give us the freedoms to do what we do day in and day out in this great country. Thank you.
Rick, I am sure up there, he is just as proud of you, as you are of him and his sacrifice. My great grandfather was killed on the Somme, obliterated by a 8" artilery shell, and my grandfather (Dad's father) served in New Guinea, Borneo, and other places close to home. He was wounded in action, but survived. I was so proud of his service, and it was the proudest moment of my life to earn my sand colored beret in the SAS, and I dedicated it to his memory. I cried reading this story, thank you for sharing it with us. As the Marines say, Semper Fi. I say, Lest we forget.
Thank you for sharing that Rick. My Grandpa was a POW in Germany after crash landing his plane and keeping his men alive, not unlike your uncle, and I wish I could have met him as well.
