How exactly do you use your Bronco....

My Bronco was built for pre running and chase duty only. I believe in using the exact vehicle for the job. I tow with a Duramax crew cab, I wheel and rock crawl with a Jeep CJ7 and I have a car to drive to work and around town.

That's great if you have the means to do so, not all of us do. I get so tired of hearing about special purpose built pre runners! You can pre run in a toyota corola, or a yellow taxi cab for petes sakes!

Well Nick, I totally agree with you about being out there. But this site that you founded is called GO FAST BRONCOS , not run whatever you got prerunners.

You are wrong, you absolutely cannot pre run in a Corolla or a taxi, all you can do is drive around until you get stuck or break and that is not pre running.

I did not say that my way was the only way or that you suck if you don't have a purpose built pre runner, I just answered the questions that Tony asked about how I use my Bronco.

I understand fully that we are not all in the same boat economically, last weekend at the race in Parker there were teams with literally millions in rolling stock including multiple Trophy trucks, a helicopter, multiple semi haulers, motor homes and a fleet of matching chase trucks compared to us with a race car, two pickups, a flat bed trailer and a room at Motel 6. Yes, we all do what we can do to be out there.

I have lived a long time making do with what I had at the time and I have learned the hard way over and over what happens when you try to go fast in a unprepared vehicle. I am old now and I have just enough resources that I no longer have make some of the compromises that I once did.

So instead of disparaging my post, please just read it and accept it as my opinion.

Respectfully, i will have to agree to disagree with you. That doesn't mean that i'm right, and you're wrong, it means that we just don't see eye to eye on this subject. And i'll still buy you a beverage of your choice when we meet up!

I'm not being arguementative, so please don't take it that way, but a thought occured to me. How many high zoot prerunners have also driven around only to get stuck, or broken? How do the baja locals make it without prerunners in their daily lives? We've all seen what they drive, and somehow they make it.

What is prerunning? Is it not to go out and get familiar with the course, and to seek out hidden dangers? Is this not done at moderate speeds? If you went any faster, wouldn't that be racing?

Likewise not being argumentative;
High zoot prerunners get stuck and broken too, usually when driven at race speeds. Locals make do by going around the tough parts and when you are following a prescribed race course +/- 50' you don't have that luxury.

Prerunning is primarily course reconnaissance and is definately done to seek out hidden dangers but many times the dangers do not fully reveal themselves until the speed is increased to near race speeds. The big difference between prerunning and racing is the luxury of stopping, whether to rest or to review a section to look for a better way. Even with the new course rules there are many options and lines that may be used.

And last is the issue of time, when we go prerunning we usually have 3 or 4 days to see up to 1000 miles of race course. If that time is spent getting unstuck or making repairs then you are not looking at the course. So a well built, well prepared prerunner is a must.

6) When off road, what are you typically doing (Chase, Pre Run, Fun Run) Sucking gas and hauling ass! Course marking for SCORE, prerunning, chasing races, camping, and just driving for pleasure.
6) Future plans for wheeling it: More of same. More camping.
7) Do you trailer with it (tow): It only tows stuff in emergencies, but it often drags disabled cars off the race track.
8) Do you trailer the Bronco: Yes, about 50% of the time I tow it to baja on a trailer so I can have a spare rig down there and a way to get it home if I wreck it. And my crewcab gets double the mileage towing the bronco than the bronco does on it's own.

1) Do you daily drive it: I will...or actually my 18 y.o. son will (once the Bronco gets home from the fab shop!) He's driving the family's old '93 Dodge Caravan, so he is REALLY looking forward to driving the Bronco to and from work, college, and Rugby practice. Lucky dog!

2) How many miles a year do you drive it: Approximately 4000-5000 (er, well...once I get it back from the shop)

3) What percentage do you drive on the street: 80% (cuz' it will be a daily driver...)

4) What percentage is off road: 20%

5) What type of off road do you do (Sand, Desert, Baja, Trail): Utah/Nevada desert, Wasatch & Uinta mountain trails

6) When off road, what are you typically doing (Chase, Pre Run, Fun Run): Fun run, supporting California Rally Series as a rally stage worker/stage captain; spectating/working BOR Racing events in Wendover, ghost town exploration with the wifey and kids...

6) Future plans for wheeling it:

Phase IIa - Exterior detailing, including painting or powdercoating the F&R prerunner bumpers, detailing out the new Autofab suspension (cleaning, painting, coating?), minor paint retouches, wiring up my Hellas.
Phase IIb - Interior refinement (center console, headliner, sound deadener, carpeting, stereo, installation of my scanners and Ham radio, etc.)

7) Do you trailer with it (tow): My fabricators re-installed my U-Haul receiver hitch under my new prerunner rear bumper, so, yes, I will tow...something. Probably purchase a motorcycle trailer for my '91 CZ 400 MX bike so I can take it to the track.

I actually traded a quad for it, it was set up the way it is now, lifted, dual shocks all around, headers, 32" BFG's with a picture of OJ looking out the read side window...freaks people out when they see it/him !

Shucks, what you see in SF do not go in the desert. I have never see a Baja local in the desert with the typical auto. What the ranchers drive on the desert roads are F150's. They drive them until the break then fix them with JY parts. They do not go fast so as to prolong the repairs. The cars in town are pretty bad except for the high dollar guys who have newer pickups, and they don't venture far from town toward the desert.
