HotRod82 wrote:FYI _ the plated buggies are actually pretty common and easy to get. You register it through the SB100 special construction process. Believe it or not they are smog exempt when done properly. Yes there are restrictions and rules but it's pretty simple to do. Part of the process is a CHP inspection so you do need 100% of the street legal equipment, i.e. , wipers, blinkers, DOT lights etc. You need fenders to pass inspection, most people take them off after they pass and just risk the fix it ticket. There is a DMV service in Ramona that is very helpful in getting this done, I have a buddy doing one as we speak.
Not sure I'd call it "east", but it can be done for sure. Smog wise with the SB100 as they are either registered by engine block year or body style year (owner's choice) under that, and I have zero clue what "body style" or year that "car" would be considered. This does make me think they called them modified VW bugs though. And those motors look newish, although I guess they could have started with an old block... OR, if the block is a race block or crate motor type black I think it may default to being seen as a '73 block. Been about 10 years since I really looked into SB100 & knew the ins & outs of it. Going to a company like the one in Ramona you mention could make life muuuuch easier when dealing in something like this. If the law is the same as it was, there are only 100 of these titles issued per year & when I was looking they were all gone/spoken for by the end of January from guys like Foose, Boyd Coddington, etc.

SB100 special constructions was upped to 500 a year a while back. They still go pretty quick, but they are not all gone on January first like before.

I didn't know that tp made that same style for the 87-91's.

I had the Autofab version when I originally built my 90. I wasn't a fan of them, swapped them out for glassworks.

I thought Autofab made them also but couldn't find them on John's web site.

That was kind of my 1st. thought also, not a huge fan but I like to be a little different. Kind of the same thing with the brick nose frontend, not a huge fan but its growing on me.

The glass seems to be made really well, its a heavy layup. Not much of a bulge is really the only complaint I have so far. Will see once I mock them up, might change my mind.

I got a call Saturday looking for a spare MSD box .The Haven Bronco quit on set Friday no fire.
My buddy Garret works on the cars for the show and for Trailer Park Boys.
He's the smurf on the step stool. The shop is running full out ,so I got asked to troubleshoot, as far as i can tell the distributor pickup is dying.
they ordered new everything just incase.

Nick I remember talking about those with you back in the day. I still recall the day I bought those fenders from John, since back then those where the only option for us 87-91ers'. I rocked them for about 5 years until Glassworks came out with the Ashley style ones. Long story short I drove down to Autofab one day shortly right after switching over to the GW "new" Ashley style fenders. John about lost it on me and wanted to know who was ripping off his Ashley style fenders. I mean it was GW 2nd set he just made and it wasn't well known. I don't blame John for getting upset but come on those trashcan looking bulge fenders IMO looked goofy. I don't think John would admit the Ashley style on the 87-91 broncos looked good, but as you know he know makes them :).
