A really great commuter bike that sits upright is the BMW GS line. Very solid bike and fun to cruise on.

Still looking around. I would love the power of the 650 but man that 250 has killer looks. Anybody know about the 310 motor BMW made for the Husqvarna?? I was lookin at the 310 I believe the last year before they started using ktm motors.

I've only had Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Honda so I have no idea about how stupid this question may be but are the ktm replacement parts reasonably priced? Not something stupid like the infamous 40$ spark plug Yamaha used I mean.

My 525exc was great, handled like a smaller bike with lots of easy to manage power. I had a Crf450x in the garage at the same time and always choose the KTM. The only reason I got rid of it was to get one with a plate.

KTM parts are easy to find and about the same price as the jap bike parts.

I'm on a 2007 525exc and highly recommend owning one. The 2007 was the last year of this motor and it is an anvil. All around great bike but I agree with the others if you are going to do more street than dirt go XR650L or even a KLR650. Then there is the KTM990............

KTM 690 and 990 would make very fun commuter bikes.

I have had a couple friends jump on the KIM band Wagon and they are nice bikes in the dirt. If you are going to commute with them the super moto wheels and brakes are a must. On the freeway the dirt tires are sketchy at best and scary in the rain. The main bad thing on the KIM bikes both friends ran into was maintenance and the fact it had to be done so ofter. I like the KTM's but for a Dual Sport the Honda 450x or 650r bikes are better in the long run. You would still need to do the super moto kit but it would be gas and go with less maintenance cost.

Now that being said. I had a Honda Shadow 650 and commuted 60 miles a day. It was much better than my friends dual sport for that much free way time. So you might want to get two bikes.

Try 606's. Last summer coming back from Colorado, I went through some large storms on the way back. Just west of Flagstaff it was raining so hard that the interstate looked like whitewash rapids. Still motored on at 75MPH, no issues. I did have to slow for 3 separate roll over accidents however......

KLR=400 pounds of fun=stable on the highway at speed.
