I have 3 jobs. First is an Aircraft Welder/Machinist. I work civil service as an Air Reserve Technician for the Air Force (8 years). Second is the same job but as an Air Force Reservist (10 years). Same job, different rank structure, different paychecks. Probably 70 percent of the work we do is related to the ground equipment repair/manufacture and tool manufacturing for the back shops. Only about 30 percent of the work we do here is on the Aircraft, parts for the Aircraft or came off the Aircraft to work in the shop. Occasionally we get dispached to the flightline where we precision measure dents, scratches, cracks etc. We also are the last resort in removing stuck/broken fasteners and related hardware. I am AF certified to weld steel, stainless steel, aluminum, magnesium, cobalt and inconel. I have the job all maintainers want. It's a cool job. I get to work with alot of cool machinery and get creative from time to time but I do get a little bored at times. Family life is good. I work M-F and one weekend a month. I've only been deployed 3 months out of the 10 years I've been in. I like my job and the pay/benefits are good but I'm always looking for something better/different. Problem is anything I'm interested needs tons of schooling and/or starts at far less than I make now. I'm often less than thrilled about working for a government that has a proven track record of not knowing how to handle money with the latest example having to be furloughed 1 day a week till October and possibly into the next fiscal year. :x

My third job is my small side business building/designing offroad truck parts and cnc plasma cutting.

My wifes uncle is retired Murrieta PD. Her dad is a Captian in the Sherrifs Dept and brother is a Deputy. My brother in law likes the job but is tired of the politics. He's been in 5 or 6 years. All three have recommended I join. I've seriously thought about it several times but I feel I can have a better family life where I'm at.

Furlough is a bummer. Its made it a pain for the AD people as well being short handed when the civs are gone.

The politics are what worries me about the PD and is what is getting me tired of the military. That and the odd hours. I am leaning towards college and a 9-5. I just enjoy hangin with my kid to much haha

I've been a mechanic at differant auto dealers for 15 years now and am absolutely fried. I want out bad but the money that I could POTENTIALLY make keeps me here. It used to be a great job but ever since the recession that started in 08 it's getting harder and harder to get ahead. Schedule blows, completely random days off, no OT with 12 days being common, straight commission on work done thats completely dependent on a service writer that doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground, it's cost me money to come to work every once in a while. Employers know there's a long line of guys waiting to replace me if I leave and they use it to their advantage. I'm typing this at work right now after a long day of not making any dough :D

Cliffs: being a mechanic is awesome everyone should do it.

Update: I'm still a mechanic but am now wrenching on the north slope in ak for an awesome company. Outside temps should be around -45 come late Dec. Add wind chill and we could be into -100 =) the excitement and better schedule is just what I needed. We'll see how the kid born and raised in socal can handle temps lower than 60*

I went to RCC and got my EMT cert...looked and looked for a job to no avail....then went back to school to get my cert in Phlebotomy..still no luck landing a job....worked a couple warehouse jobs....and finally when my dad had a massive heart attack two yrs ago, he convicted me to take over the family HVAC business we have in Yucaipa, CA. So I guess my job would be owner of small business. Note to any GFBers in the San B, Yucaipa, Redlands, Beaumont, Banning Loma Linda, highland areas.....I will give you guys a huge discount!

I'm a equipment mechanic fabricator for Riverside County. Not going to get rich but it does provide a comfortable life and gets the bills paid with a little bit of money for the toys. I went to UTI A couple years after high school and graduated with a bachelors degree in diesel and industrial technology.
I love my job today is totally different than yesterday. As if no I'm working toward becoming shop foreman and then moving on to fleet supervisor.

Well, I have been regrouping and working 2 jobs right now.

I use to work for a Home School Program as a computer teacher, guitar lessons and bus driver for field trips. I also worked as a Sound Engineer in studio and for Live sound. I would travel with bands and mange their sound in a wide range of venues and events. Along with those duties I also worked for a Audio Scripture Recording Ministry that recorded the Bible for those that are blind or can't read. I am a studio engineer that worked on editing and maintained our digital audio recording studio.

About 6 years ago I had some family member's come down with cancer and I had to quit my primary job with the Home School program and was able to work part time for the studio remotely over the internet. My grandfather passed away of cancer 6 years ago but my mom has been battling it for that last 6 years and is now in remission. After her Cancer went into remission we put her house in Arizona up for rent and bought a fixer upper house with a view of the beach in Imperial Beach. I have been remodeling it for the last couple years little by little. We call it her Grandma House for retirement.

So now I am still Working part time for the Audio Scripture recording ministry as a Studio engineer, mobile recording studio logistics, IT support and Network Administrator.

My second part time job is as a Kenwood Race Radio and communications Tech. I kind of fell into the job. For more than 25 years I have been doing one thing or another with racing in Baja and the US. I have worked on many of pit crews as a tool gopher, tire changer and communication relay. I have also been a chase truck driver and recovery.
On top of those I also worked as a course worker for FUB and ran check points for MDR at Plaster City. I also ran a check point for Drive out at Plaster City and worked as a Course Rover and did vehicle recovery.

Doing all that with some low budget teams made me look for ways to help teams and race radios ended up being a way I could find a used Kenwood at a fare price. I started by getting a Kenwood radio from the Mesa Arizona city public works dept. I had some experience with CB radios growing up and figured out how to repair / setup the radios. I was also fortunate enough to get pointers from Scott and Bob the owners of PCI Race Radio's. I ended up getting radios for a couple friends and then the word started getting out, then calls started coming in from a couple well know Fabricator's and their customer. It gets a little expensive when buying 110 watt remote head Kenwood Race radios for all the trucks on your team. I have been lucky to do jobs I like and still be there for Family. I may not be rich but get by for now.

I heard a quote years ago, "Find your passion and do it" I know I love what I do and can't wait to see where life goes...

Been looking for a good IT job but haven't found it yet. Well the story is I have a BA in media arts.. With focus in computer animation. But could find a job there. Anywhere . So joined army got EMT and couldn't find a job in the field either. Anywhere. So went back to school again for IT and want to design again but finding that great job is a shell game. But so far worked security for years and getting kinda stuck in it. Need a way out soon .
