2012 SCORE Baja 1000

Back from the north half marking. Here is the story.
Such it is with the usual marking issues.
Damage:
Old Yellar ruined 2 MTRs. Had to borrow one of Steve's spares to get home from San Ignacio.
Broke a leaf spring punched a hole in the floor, and created a massave gas leak. Took it back to Glen on my trailer pulled by my F350, replaced both leaf packs and found a bad tank vent hose. Came back to LAB and continued marking until another fuel hose came off Fixed at the silt bed before Viscanio.

The Stretch has electrical gremlins no start and had to resort to manual start with a jumper on the solenoid. Released a zip tie under the dash ans relieved wire tenison. Good to go most of the time.
Low batt volts. The 4 way switch is hot. probably bad contacts in the switch. A good batt was installed same problem.
Lost the LF U-joint after LAB and used 2wd for the rest of the trip. This is from running the hubs locked all the time. Take note. Dicy in the silt bed.
Busted a driving light lens.
Did cleanup in Borego and burried the thing in the deeps. Took a while to jack and stuff crap under the wheels. Used the HiLift on the rear bumper. 12 psi in the rear. Had to jack to get the diff off the sand. Drove to a hard place and aired up.
Course:
Pretty much as always until Cocos. Coco has marked, with signs & rocks about 3 monster washouts over 10' deep.
Goat trail was uneventful when driven very slowly.
Road from LAB to the summit to the Fransisquito turn was washed out on many places. We added rocks to ID the bad ones passable but dicy at speed.
Silt bed before Visciano was OK for marking and will be terrible for the race. Expect SCORE to allow wide birth to the racers.
New section from Vis to San Ig is sandy with lots of turns and will get whooped by race time.
After RM290 the course will need a change due to constuction. No biggie just an extra mile or two.

SF is going to rock Friday night after the race has gone by.

I got this in an email and figured I would forward it as a heads up. This is in San Felipe

"important note: The Pemex by us here at the El Dorado/ Jolly man road has some water in the gas, enough to effect most cars, also a reliable source who accurately measured his gas cans said that, at that same station you get 14 gallons of gas for what would show up as 15 on the pump. (54.5 liters & 58.5). The best station in SF so far is the newer one at the circle of trees, if you were south bound (easterly by direction) towards the beach downtown, you would go all the way around the circle and go to the newer station on your right (NE'ly by direction) Good gas , no problems with calibration, and 12.6 pesos to the dollar, you pump your own there and pay inside."

One of the costs of living in MX is the PMEX station give you less gas than the pump indicates. Been that way for a long time. The 2 stroke bike guys all know it because the use accurately calibrated dump cans. That is the way it is.
Your fuel mileage will reflect lower MPG.

Good to know on the fuel readings. I guess it was George and Belindas comment about the water in the gas I was more concerned about.

My truck makes more HP on Pemex. Thank the low compression. Lol.

My trucks are build with "low" compression on purpose for the very reason of Pemex. Who needs 10.0:1???? hahaha

Actually you have to love PMEX. No additives - pure unleaded. Refined in California.
cost today 3.10/3.20 for 87/91
Chris used to have a C8/prerunner with a Leon Patton motor detuned for 91 Oct and the only gas that it could live with was PMEX 91. No detonation no running on like the CA gas. He used PMEX for many races.

GUNIT update
Steering box seal let go north of the goat trail. Lost all the fluid they had. Got more from Checkerpit limped to the PMEX at Valle Trinidad where the met Chase. Proceeded to BFG pit at Borego spent some time then limped to a motel south of Eldorado Ranch. They are still there at 8AM Friday.
The other issue was loose ball joints. No update if the replaced them with new units in the chase truck. The spare steering box was down south.
The power steeering pump operates the hydroboost, ram and the steering box.
They had lots of virtual help from Weatherman, SCORE relay. Real help from Checker pits, and BFG pits. All I did was discuss the events with Dave.
