Another rear end option.

So, the other day I was thinking of a cheap way to upgrade our rearends. Mostly because I am cheap.

Something occurred to me, why not a Dodge rear?

The 94-01 or 02+ rear ends have some good stuff going for them. They are cheap, common, already 5x5.5, and have a 9.25 inch ring gear.

Looks like they are wider and already have a 108 tooth reluctor gear too. Many have disc brakes.

I am going to take some pictures and measure the rear in my 07 beater truck in the next few days.

Maybe I'll use my four door to test this.

Interesting Philo. Do some research!

Interesting idea for sure.
I'd be interested to see what the WMS to WMS measurement is.

The idea is interesting. Avalability of aftermarket quality parts that can stand up to off roading would be a question. Does Dana still make rear ends for Dodge? Does Dodge have a Full Floater that could be converted to a 5 lug for our Bronco's?

It will be interesting to see what you come up with.

Not the largest gear ratio selection but enough to work with.

This would be a budget option, not a full floater. If you need a full floater that is cheap buy a D60 out of an E250 and put 5 lug hubs on it or just go 8 lug. Not a lot of ratios available but the only one anyone really uses is 4.56 which is available. Detroits are available too but most of these rear ends have limited slip which works fine for most of us. According to Pirate4x4 they handle 38" tires ok.

9.25 is stronger than an 8.8, and eliminating wheel spacers is good for those guys that are wider than stock and using them.

And no, Dana no longer makes axles for Dodge. AAM does.

Interesting, for me it was more of a academic question. I am already running a Currie 9+ rear end and my next upgrade is to convert it to a full Floater, 35 spline axles and 4.88 gears.

My Bronco is a trailer queen and not an everyday driver.

Gear options was my other question and while the link isn't working for me Philo noted the 4.56 is available & what most people run.

This could be a decent option for some guys.

It showed the following ratios available:

2.94
3.21
3.55
3.90
4.11
4.56
4.88

As well as several different lockers.

seems like most gear options for guys who would look at doing something like this are covered with the 4.11, 4.56's and 4.88's. I wonder how common the 4.11's would be in stock form, or if the 3.55's are more of the stock range.

It's not like many other options are available for the TTB D44. 3.73 is the only once I see missing.

Anyone find the WMS yet?

I've ran a few 9.25's off-road and always had problems with housings. I finally trussed one and it held up decent but then has problems breaking side gears in carriers using auburns. If leaf, the first part that tended to give problems were the perches ripping the tubes.

I never had shaft or ring/pinion problems, even once I trussed and detroited it. Was a good axle after that.

What was the application and tire size? Broncos make 8.8 housing smile all the time without even trying if they get jumped a lot.

74 half ton power wagon with a small block and 35's. No air time...

Ya, I ditched the 8.8 after bending it twice. Since I went to the Currie 9+, no issue's, and yes, lots of air time.
