MAS/late model computer with BBK throttle body?
MAS/late model computer with BBK throttle body?
Has anyone done an install of a later model mustang computer with a MAS on a BBK throttle bodied 351w?
Any experience or stories of Broncos with this modification?
My '91 has a reman 351w ( 30k miles ) long block with very little mods performance wise and feels weak on power and now is running poorly. Like, barely running. I thought it was just the catalytic converter going bad but it turns out not. It was backfiring and would flat out fall on its face from a dead stop. "Check engine" light, PFFT!
My mechanic who i've taken my vehicles to for the last ten years and works on everything including big buck hot rods is STRONGLY recommending that I take it to a guy in HB who does the MAS install with a later model computer to make it run to its capacity, and is warning me that somewhere down the road that if I don't do it its going to cost me dearly. The guy also tunes the engine with the MAS on a dyno to get it running the way it truly should.
His recommendations are due to his experience with another '91 just like mine with a stroker kit that eventually threw a rod as a result of it running crappy due to the old computer and the lousy performance as a result of the engine not being able to really run due to that computer. After the tune he got almost 500+hp out of a 391 with the MAS.
I trust this mechanic. I would be interested to hear any stories as i'm going to do this and I don't really think that the engine is running anywhere near its fullest ability. I drive my wife and kids around in this truck and can't risk a catastrophic failure ANYWHERE we may be traveling especially offroad.
Anyone?

Can't help on your question but I'd be interested to know who the guys is in "HB" if HB in this case stands for Huntington Beach. Not having any clue where you live, HB could stand for a lot of places I guess, but around here that's Huntington.

Re: MAS/late model computer with BBK throttle body?
SD tuned can run just as well as a MAF
a lot of the same things to make the motor run correctly vacuum lines, pcv.....etc are used on both motor set ups... I would fix these before a swap is done.....
I have a mustang PCM/ECM on my 1992 bronco.... converting it to MAF I like mine set up
what Tranny do you have? E4OD or AOD or C6 this can make a difference.
The post below is a good start in finding the correct MAF fit for you. it is just an example of one way you can go. SD tuned correctly is a great set up as well.....remember that

Yes HB refers to Huntington Beach sorry for the confusion
Re: MAS/late model computer with BBK throttle body?
I had my guy go through all the potential vacuum leaks and get the motor running reasonably well before this last episode happened. He says its going to continue to happen if we don't get the intake issue solved. The MA guy does the whole kit and kaboodle in one shot when they do the install so that would resolve any collateral issues. Thanks for the link!

It is a good swap and if the person doing it knows what they are doing...works well ..... not sure if smog is a issue but ask about that as well.
depending on witch one you do. It can cause issues at the smog station with visual even tho it runs better and more efficient. just a heads up

Thanks. He's less that 5 min. from my house and in the quick searching I've done thus far he's got some pretty good reviews.
Re: MAS/late model computer with BBK throttle body?
My guy raves about him. Says he finds power in everything. The conversion will include all parts and labor and take a day to install. Quoted $1600. Apparently what happened was went I went up Saddleback a couple of weeks ago the computer interpreted the altitude change and didn't reset back down to sea level when I came back home and returned to my normal daily driving. This was the best guess from my guy as to what happened. They remapped it and it drives now ok, and i'm doing the conversion early next week to resolve any issues moving forward. Thank goodness I didn't run me and the girls up to Mammoth. I'll post more info after the install.

Is there any issue with the smog man doing this swap?

Re: MAS/late model computer with BBK throttle body?
only if they check your under hood sticker as part as visual..... other wise no ( as long as motor stays small block as well)
Re: MAS/late model computer with BBK throttle body?
He makes the necessary smog appropriate changes so it doesn't cause an issue. Still waiting for my turn in his shop, doesn't look like its gonna happen till early next year.

If I'm reading (skimming) your original post correctly, the truck is running badly and you've been referred to a guy that maximizes performance builds. Correct?

Did you ever have the job done ???
MAS/late model computer with BBK throttle body?
Nope the guy claims he couldn't ever source a part for the install so I'm still waiting and now I'm not sure if I'm gonna go through with it because the truck is running well after some sorting out and 2 new catalytic converter's....

This is the most complete maf conversion kit I've found. Not cheap but everything is there.

MAS/late model computer with BBK throttle body?
I talked to them at length about there kits a few years ago. Considering I hadn't spent a dime yet there customer service was awesome guy took a chunk of time to really explain everything to me. When I'm ready to do it I'll likely go to them.
