who's running a "built" motor?

Post by Seabass »

What displacement, compression, cam are you running
What would you do differently? And why?
I want to start a discussion on here about building motors because our application is so different than all the mustang stuff on the web.

Are you wanting to know about CA legal motors, non-legal motors or all? I'd love to see what can be "built" from a SBF and still pass a smog test straight up.

Happy to look at the 600HP machines too though.......

Anything will pass smog if you slip the right guy the right bill.

I'd like info on it all. Anything past standard bolt on stuff. I'm still trying to figure out compression ratio and cam I want to run on my future 408. For the same money invested in a well mannered street friendly motor I could have a high strung fire breather with 100hp more. I'd like people who have already done something similar to chime in.

I got a built motor, i have yet to install it in the bronco. It has a block out of a rare police interceptor (351w). It has a complete probe forged bottom end. 4" stroke with .060 over pistons with a -15.7cc dish. The heads are world products windsor Sr. Heads that are ported. It has long tube hedman headers, a weiland stealth dual plane, with a modified holly 3310 750 carb.

It has hyd solid lifters, and crane 1.6 roller rockers. The cam is a very mild comp cams.

Compressio. Ratio is 10.32 to1. Which is more than i wanted, i would have selcted pistons that had a deeper dish, and would have aimed for 9-9.5to 1.

I have heard it run, and it sounds good. It is over 500 ft lbs, he says 450+ hp.

Seabass,

I have been researching "built" motors too.
Here is a link to FSB guy with a 408 stroker

There is also a link to a video on it.

http://fullsizebronco.com/forum/showthr ... 210&page=3

Also have been looking into supercharged options. Most of these are adapting a 302 to a 351 requiring a custom bracket , some Even make u give up air conditioning ....uh that's not going to happen, that's why I'm building a bronco.

FYI guy who makes the punisher valve for the E40D is a wealth of info on building 351 motors.

It's hard to beat the Ford crate engines. For the 427 Windsor we put in the race bronco, I don't think I could buy the parts for what the complete engine costs. Summit offered it cheaper than Ford, but still with the Ford warranty, it actually shipped from Ford. The down sides are that you have to buy it all at once instead of building it up a little bit at a time as budget allows. And they are designed for premium fuel. Check them out, they really do have high end parts and the block is a big bore race block (they call it the Boss 351 block), for example our 427 is not even stroked. You can stroke it and make 460 out of it. The old wisdom that a 392 was more reliable or that a 408 was about as big as you should go, do not apply with these new bad ass blocks and high end parts. Of course you are not going to pass smog with these.

Chris did you ever have the low compression stroker in ol yellar dynoed? What power was it putting out? Was that anywhere near smogable

Never had Ole Yellar on the dyno. It was nowhere near smogable. I guess from seat of the pants that it made 450hp and similar torque at the crank?
There is this soft sand that goes on for miles at the south end of Laguna Salada outside Mexicali. With my old stock engine I could not get through it in 4wd high range, had to use low range.
After I built the hot rod low compression engine, Ole Yellar would chew through that same section in 2wd with power to spare. Massive difference. And fuel mileage was about the same.

I'm hoping to fire up my 408 by the end of the year. Should put out 500 at the crank, kinda wish I put it on a engine dyno after it was built to know for sure.

Seabass,

Lots of info on FSB on EEC tuning for both the engine and transmission.

http://www.fullsizebronco.com/forum/for ... order=desc

Appears to be 3 different tuners these guys r using

1. Tweecer

2. Moates quarter horse and innovate wb

3. Ford lightning EEC

Some r doing this on stroked engines , others on cams , upper assemblies, stock, and others r doing this with intake/exhaust mods only

Most r reporting much improved acceleration , fuel economy and over all happier with the engine.

Cost
Tweecer
Netbook
Wide band O2 sensor
Bassani y pipe
3" high flow exhaust
K&N intake
$2000

Others mods to consider r
80# Bosch injectors $600
Cam

I have a 96 with a 5.8 e40d and this is where I will start

Ive got a 351 with edelbrock aluminum cylinder heads, upper and lower intake manifolds and headers. Bassani Y pipe, magnaflow 3" cat back with hi flow cat and Ford Motorsports E303 cam, dyno tuned at 211HP and 289ft lbs. Bottom end is stock.

Ryan,

Is that rear wheel HP?

Did u get the EEC tuned?

Did u change the e40d shift points?

Do u notice more get up and go?

What's the power like?

Thanks for the feedback.

I'll vouch for him. Ryan's truck has some balls. I was surprised when I rode in it. Plenty of low end and the trans (I believe he has a punisher vb) would chirp gears.

That is to the wheels. It has been dyno tuned with the SCT software. Shift points and red line have been changed as well as converter lock up. It is much quicker and shifts are very positive. Ive had the trans rebuilt also, steel planets, Z pack intermediate clutches and Punisher VB with twin coolers and an e-fan on a t-stat set to 190*
It moves around pretty good :-)
