Shopping list questions

Post by DKThree »

So even though I am still Broncoless I am going to start getting parts and wanted to get a little input to make sure all is right.

My plan is to go CT beams with coilover front and leaf sprung back keeping the shocks under the bed. It will be a trail running and light prerunning rig...kinda do it all vehicle.

I just have a few questions:

CT Beams - Thinking of going uniball pivots and clocking the 3rd member in case I extend them in the future. Worth it or overkill?

Coilovers - 9100's with ACV. Where should I start with valving and springs?

Rear shocks - 9100's 4 tube bypass. 12" shortbody to stay under the bed correct?

Rear leaf springs - Searched on this and not a lot of info between J40's and F53's. Leaning towards J40's for less sway without a 2 link and less sag when loaded down (and if I tow a little). Any thoughts??

Thanks for the help!

Bilsteins, contact Joel Ward (randomthoughtsracing on this board) and he has a valving setup already dialed for the Bronco with Cut and Turn and Deavers in the rear.

Definitely go eithe f53 or j40. I would still do the 2 link, I have driven with and without them and they provide a very positive feel on the springs. The difference between the two is width, J40s are 3" wide and F53's are 2.5" wide. If your looking for load, might want to try the new Q80s (an f53 with an extra leaf for more load capacity).

As for the Cut and Turns, definitely do the uniballs, makes the front feel a whole bunch tighter.

Also, according to Mark Kiefer, clocking the diff is not required for extended beams.

Interesting, I thought it was more for extending than turned beams. Will it negatively effect anything on just a turned beam? I will talk to Mark again too. Thanks

Copy. Haven't heard of the Q80, I will look into that. Does the J40 have little taller ride height? I may do a 2 link in the future but I dpn't think it's in the budget right now..

Thanks for the replys!

Height wise the J40 and F53 are the same and spring rates are very close. The biggest difference is the width. I run the J40s and tow a small trailer with no problems. I am a fan of the extra width on the spring to help control sway.

The rest of your list is good you are acquiring some nice parts that will work well for your build. Keep us posted

I talked to Mark and he does it for his turned beams because of the way he cuts and turns them. The other beams I was looking at only clocks for extended beams, also because of axle clearance. So I guess it depends on how the beam is worked... I'm just glad I got Mark on the phone!!! Very helpful!

Deaver doesn't stock the J40 anymore so I would have to custom order it...I'm now leaning towards the Q80.

I'm really lucky to have the Mrs. approval and a budget for this opposed to being on a budget with lack of approval.

I might have found a Bronco as well but will have to wait until Weds or thurs to find out!!!!!!!!

Again, thanks for the help

The sway controlling is due to a higher spring rate. The 3" wide spring I believe has a 2-3" less free arch measurement. If the free arch measurements were the same, I would agree with the "sway" argument.

Would sway be much noticeable if your towing a load under 1000lbs?

As long as the trailer is loaded correctly it should tow very easily.

Good. That's the goal!

One request. I know it's tempting to ask every question you have in your own stand alone thread, but rather than bury info (replies there, revive an existing thread on the same topic. That way it all stays consolidated and the next guy can benefit from your questions and the following responses.

This is sort of off topic but.. Can F53's be converted to Q80's?

If so, this may be what I'm going to do since Tony convinced me to keep my F53's and ditch the lift blocks.

No problem. I was on the verge of ordering some stuff so just wanted to double check but will add in the future.

The Q80 is the same as the F53 except for an additional leaf to help increase load carrying.
