Cage is plated to the body throughout. There is a slight angle on the mounts but he angle of the picture doesn't show it.

Hey everyone,

I was reading about cages for the FSB, on FSB, and there was a post about not tying the cage into the frame because the bronco was never designed to be a unibody vehicle. Also in the same post the argument was made that you would want your frame and body/cage to sheer away from each other in the case of a massive roll over accident. The reason seemed to be that when this occured the cage would only have to cope with the pressures created by the body and not all of the unsprung components in addition to he frame. What are you thougts?

That's what I thought but just wanted to verify. I know one of the goals for your cage was silence. How silent is your set up?

I had three major goals with my cage build.
1) was low noise (achieved. Almost as quiet as it was pre cage, but I added full dynamat)
2) little room taken away inside. Things like the hidden kick panels and what not achieved that.
3) safe enough to save me an a rollover. Not mean to race. I believe that was achieved. It's well tied into the entire body at the a b and c pillars, as well as the lower body. It also as a consequence of this has made the body feel much tighter. Hard to describe but doesn't feel like it's gonna fall apart.

The only addition which I didn't initially incorporate but have already planned to tie into the engine cage. That will be done within the next 5-6 months.

Can't wait to see how you plan to tie into the engine cage!! With how meticulous the rest of your build is I'm sure it will make for a really great read.

I've ridden in Tony's truck. His truck is quieter then an uncaged truck. I can talk at a normal level from the back seat on a rough dirt road.

Tony any idea if the tie in will bring engine/ shock noise with it? ....My guess is minimal.

Nope. I would expect it too. Will tie in with poly mounts just like everything else do I expect no difference. I'm also not on bypasses so don't shock noise now.

for sure the best setup to have performance and daily driver type status..... go any place and your co dog can sleep....

headsets is the only way I get that comfort.....hah

I don't have a cage yet, but I was surprised after installing my bypass shocks. I can't hear them at all. Only if I am driving down an alley with the windows open can I hear them when I hit a pot hole. Granted, they are under the bed, but compared to my buggy that goes clackity-clack when I run over a marshmallow, they are pretty quiet. I am sure that would change if they were in my back seat.

I have a question or two about cages, as I am currently fabricating mine.

What do you do about the factory steering column mount, The aluminum piece that the e brake is mounted to? I am going to do an engine cage tied to cab cage, and I am trying to figure out how to get tubes to the drivers side shock tower, without messing with the steering column or brake booster.

Second question is, what is the best place to go through the body to attach to the frame in the far back of the vehicle?

Has anyone gotten a chance to play with a pre-bent cage from Rhodes Race cars or SW race cars, or anyone like that? I looks like they'll need some gussets and tube added yet once it comes in. But it looks like a good way to get a head start. Need some links? Here ya go:

Those look like the same thing Jegs sells. I'd see if you can't get any pics of them IN the truck as my guess is they aren't tucked very tight at all as doing that is much more of a desert thing & these cages are sold to drag race guys typically.

That's what I was thinking. Most of these sites also have drag racing stuff. It's relatively cheap, so I wont be surprised if fitment kinda sucks.

Those pre fabed cages look like mine. Mine is 1 5/8, which is roundy round or go straight stuff. Not sure I trust it much, so she's gonna get yanked in favor of a new 1.75 cage tied into tge frame.

As heavy as our Bronco's are, a 2" Dom main hoop and forward A pillars should be a minimum if you are pulling a cheap pre fab cage. It is kind of scary when people don't do a main hoop for the B pillar in addition to not doing a lateral brace on the B pillar. I have see a couple B pillar down tubes sheer right off in a side roll over. They even had 4" by 4" gussets in the upper corners. A gusset is no replacement for proper triangulation.
