Yeti shit the bed
Bronco stumbled a couple times driving in the rain to the airport. On the way home, it backfired like a cannon and died...rolled to a stop. I think the ECU may have failed, but not certain. The scanner is not picking up a signal through the OBDII port, so codes aren't retrievable. Very unusual. I checked the fuses and relays associated with it and everything checks out. It's getting fuel, but no spark. Has been running rich for a few weeks with CEL, as if an O2 sesnor was bad, but obviously that wouldn't prevent it from running. Any thoughts?

Sound like ignition, but if you are not getting codes, it's likely the ECU has crapped. Try another ecu and see what happens. The backfire sounds like a timing issue, which might have destroyed the MAF meter.

Failed ECU's are pretty rare. I would look for shorted wires.

Not ECU they don't fail or at least very rare. Ford OBD does not monitor spark and associated electrics. No help form a code reader for that stuff. Did you look for a loose coil connection and associated wires?

Re: Yeti shit the bed
Thanks for the replies fellas. It did turn out to be a faulty coil. Voltage was good, resistance was low, yet it would still throw a weak spark and quit after it warmed up. I plugged it in when I saw spark during testing and the engine fired right up, but idled rough and died when the throttle opened. Replaced the coil and now the idle is smoother than it's been in a couple years.
The computer problem is purely coincidental and it's actually just fine. Turns out the blue tooth scanner failed. Hahaha! It was nice for a while. Technology...

Funny you mention that. I bought a back up coil off of an ex GFB'r and the summbich never sent it to me. I guess that's what Jeeps do to the brain. (I still love you Rob)VintageIronFab wrote:Morale of the story--- bring a spare coil with you in the parts box!

Hell I thought you broke your high dollar beer cooler, backed over it or something dumb, glad it was only a coil.
