I just wanted to get some confirmation from someone who has done it. Is it possible to remove the oil pan without lifting or moving the motor? It looks like it should come out pretty easily. The only thing that looks to be in the way is the y-pipe. Am I correct or is there something else that's going to screw me up when I start taking it apart?

The pick up tube is in the way. You have to place a 2 x 4 between the motor and the mounts.

I've wondered this too. My pan leaks like a mofo as well as other areas on the motor. I'm just gonna deal with the leaks till I can pull the whole thing and rebuild/clean as well as put new motor mounts on.

@Kel - mine isn't horrible but it does need to be done.

Motor mounts aren't bad, there's a single nut under each, and 2 bolts above, with a floor jack n a 2x4 u can swap em fairly easily. The oil pan though is worth doing with the motor out n turned upside down. More work yes but better view for cleanliness.

My motor mounts aren't bad but i'll be upgrading to autofab mounts. I have oil collecting in the little pocket next to the distributor on top of the motor (not leaking at the distributor though, not sure where), the oil filter adapter thingy and the pan. It's a mess.

Make shure u pressure wash it, your oil pressure sending unit is just above the oil filter housing and can leak down looking like its comming from the filter housing,driver side pan gasket, filter housing ect. Could be an easy fix. As u probably saw mine is another location.

What's the best degreaser? I heard simple green from another thread. Never used it for that though. I've always used autozone engine brite or whatever it's called. That stuff STINKS!

Gunk foamy engine bright works well but is basically desiel in a can lol, I like any of the citrus or purple power type products or greased lightning. Just don't get the purple stuff on aluminum it etches the hell out of it. You will have to repolish any polished aluminum as it oxidizes it to bright white. Use the purple stuff in full concentration with caution.

Thought Purple Power was a no-no on painted surfaces?

I use engine bright gel, works pretty good.

Purple power is pretty strong, the absolute best degreaser I've found is from the 99 cents only stores and it looks just like green antifreeze. Has red writing on a standard spray bottle. I can't remember it's name but it dosent hurt paint and wipes desiel soot off in seconds. It's zap or wham or some type of descriptive name.

Cool, thanks. As soon as I get my suspension set up I'll start to tackle the leaks. I'll be sure to share some pics of the glorious external sludge multiplier that is my motor.

so this CAN be done without removing the engine? I was thinking about doing this on mine by lifting the truck for the suspension to stretch and pulling the engine up a little with a hoist. But I hear the oil pick up tube will be in the way.....

It can be done but its probly faster to lift the motor.

Crossmember interferes with the pan being able to drop. You have to lift the motor unless you have some form of a wrench to take off the bolts for the pick up tube.

I did mine in the car Jose. You just gotta use the right swear words and hold your tounge just right.lol use felpros one piece gasket. Drop the pan as fare as it'll go. Take the two motor mount bolts off and jack up the motor off of the bell housing. (Watch the fan in the shroud )Take lots of time to clean the mating surfaces. Once your done banging the pan around cleaning everything then you work the gasket OVER the pan first the back then the front or vise versa. Do not try and get the gasket around the pump on the inside of the pan. You can do it but it's messy and frustrating. I flushed my pan out after final assembly to get any gasket junk out of the pan too.
