how do you know when this is starting too go out? what does it do exactly??

erratic idle, and inconsistent throttle response were what i experienced. you have to remove the throttle body to replace the TPS so when i did that i also cleaned up the Idle Air Control Valve, cleaned the throttle body and sea foamed the engine and it ran a lot better afterwards. my distributor cap and rotor were also corroded which was probably the main culprit for my inconsistent throttle. if you have a manual there is a proper procedure for clocking the TPS when you install it, if you don't do it right you will get a high idle when you put it back together.

i'm up to 12 mpg on the freeway...

High idle! as in when you start the engine the RPM's shoot up past 1000! i had took it all apart and cleaned as much as i could. pain in the ass getting that thing off! anyways i put it all back together the way it all came apart. i guess I'll see how it works when i go for a drive this weekend. I'm kinda on my last leg with this POS..

Would I have on of these on my 1986 5.0 ho mustang motor? It would make sense because everytime I start it the thing flys up in rpm and idles all over the place..

I think your stangs TPS is the adjustable type...

ISSUE: All Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) mounting screws have a "Pozidrive" head. The "Pozidrive" head looks a lot like a Phillips screw head. Use of a Phillips head screwdriver to remove a "Pozidrive" screw will normally result in a rounded or damaged screw head. Many technicians think it is an overtorqued or "frozen" screw. An adhesive was also used as a thread sealant starting with the 1988 model year. This adhesive requires still more effort to loosen and remove the screw.

ACTION: To prevent rounded or damaged screw heads when servicing the TPS mounting screws, technicians should always use a #2 "Pozidrive" screwdriver.

Don’t worry if the Check Engine Light is not on, the computer will store lesser important codes without flashing lights in your face. First you need to find the self-test plugs to read codes from the EEC. There are 2 plugs to find. One is triangular and has 6 pins; it is called the Self-Test plug. The other is a smaller single pin plug; it is called the Self-Test Input (STI). These are what the plugs look like. The self-test plugs are located along the driver�s side fender by the firewall on 1986-95 Mustangs.
