How often are those of you guys doing mostly dirt miles changing ATF and filter? Mileage intervals? If it hits a certain temp you change it regardless? Color of oil?

I am changing mine this week

Does a 96 have a TC drain plug?

I generally go overkill on fluid replacement intervals. For something that seems mostly dirt I would change it (all of it) every 15k. Unless it's been overheated or starts to look dirty before. Transmission fluid (even the most expensive stuff) is cheap compared to transmission repairs.

For a truck like yours that has a drain plug in the trans pan, I would do whatever it takes to get the fluid clean now, then drain and fill the pan every third oil change. If you're really hard on the trans I would drain and fill every other oil change.

I use Amsoil atf and I just changed it after 40K+. Mine has never seen the 250F redline
Looked ok slightly darker than new. Couldn't tell a color change until I had a clear plastic container full. Slight amount of band wear based on the solids in the bottom of the pan. Very little metal on the magnet.
Changed the internal filter.

Don't forget to purge the cooler. I use 10PSI shop air because flowing new atf thru the thing is slow and messy.

Yes, and a rubber plug to cover the hole. The dp looks like 1/8" pipe.

Seems like I put ~18 qt bottles in mine with 2 big coolers and complete draining. The variable is the coolers and whether or not you have an external filter.

The 96 manual says 16.2 Qt No external cooler or filter.
That has to be a new dry system.

I change my fluid every 60K miles and I change my external filter every other oil change and add a quart or so to bring it back up.

Unless the fluid is getting burnt it does not need to be changed. If it is burnt so are all your seals...

Bringing up an old thread....
78 c-6, what kind of ATF to use? Type F or Mercon?

I want to use Mobile 1 full synthetic, any problems with this combination for race application?
Thanks
