Rebuilding an engine on a budget
Re: Rebuilding an engine on a budget
To my knowledge it shouldn't cause you any problems.

Re: Rebuilding an engine on a budget
I think the good old motor that came in it will do just fine. 150,000 on the original motor sounds like a good run so why not follow the same pattern?

Re: Rebuilding an engine on a budget
FWIW...
In the past few years there has been a development that some may consider.
It turns out that in the ever interesting quest to be 'Green' the powers that be have
determined that Zinc is a bad thing and so to preserve Catalytic converters they
have removed it from engine oil.
Now in a roller engine this is not really a big deal.
However in a flat tappet engine it "can" cause the Camshaft to fail, which will virtually destroy the engine.
I know of several 'unexplained' failures.
Thus if it was $200 to get the roller engine personally I would.
Just a tid-bit from the Center of Oregon.

Hence the reason weirdos like me are adding 2 stroke oil to the gas tank when we fill up our diesels. Gotta love the greenies...
Oh wait - that's because they also took the zinc out of the fuel. Same comment about the greenies

I use an oil additive with lots of Zinc at every oil change in all my cars. I have a roller motor in the Bronco, but it's good to have the extra protection just in case.

Care to drop a name Steve? I'm always up to hear what others use regularly for this type of stuff.

No idea. I just know it's intended to be used with regular oil changes. We (at the shop) have been using it for a long time with good results.PaulW wrote:What is the ratio. I heard the to much could be bad?

Re: Rebuilding an engine on a budget
HUH? I've never even heard of that. I'll definately have to check into it. So it'd run better and not throw codes? Would there be anything i'd have to buy in order for it all to come together? I'm sorry, its just hard because I know they have a a mass air and idk if that makes a difference.

All of the parts off the original engine will bolt on.hobbyturnedobsession wrote:HUH? I've never even heard of that. I'll definately have to check into it. So it'd run better and not throw codes? The single part that MIGHT cause a problem is the distributor drive gear and with a new engine put a new distributor in it, and that solves that. Other then a small amount of power gain there will be virtually no other problem.

5.8 engines all use the same imbalance, 5.0 changed from 28oz to 50oz at one point.hobbyturnedobsession wrote:do i need a different flexplate? My buddy asked me this and he brought up a good point. Is there a difference?

i looked up the stock distributor for my 92 to compare it to a roller 95 and they have the same part number from auto zone.

Re: Rebuilding an engine on a budget
Be careful, roller cams require a different material for the distributor gear. If you don't have the correct one for your cam you will be replacing one or both quickly! SteveG can attest to this! I wouldn't trust Autozone computers for that info.hobbyturnedobsession wrote:i looked up the stock distributor for my 92 to compare it to a roller 95 and they have the same part number from auto zone.

I've always been a fan of summit racing, and they say this one will work from anything 78-96. Would this work then?

Yes, in the notes it says the following "Steel distributor gear included, designed for use with roller camshaft only. " Honestly it won't gain you any power or reliability over a stock distributor with a good rotor, cap, and plug wires.hobbyturnedobsession wrote:http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-8 ... refilter=1
