17 inch wheel choices

Stuff breaks when you wreck... bottom line. I havent seen a wheel come apart without being involved in a wreck... Thats just my experience> Shit when you wreck if the wheel dosent come apart, your hub or upright or beam/arm is the next likely scnerio.

Robby Gordon (lol) runs cast wheels and Im sure we could find out how many he has broken... The added weight of the cast wheels would be added structure to a less marginal wheel for saftey reasons?

It sure would be enlightning to have real data. If you got data from the manufacturer would you believe it?
Are you sure that a typical TT is using cast wheels?
I do know that TT testing for the larger tires has resulted in nothing that works. I heard that BFG will wait for forged wheels & 8 lugs before selling the new bigger tire. Maybe they know forged is better? Or maybe the test wheels (6 lug) were just cast show truck wheels?

Contributing issue is with a 17" wheel the tire usually has less rubber from rim to ground. More rubber means less load onthe wheel due to the lower spring rate of the tire. That is why the rice rockets with huge rims bounce down the street and the loose the drag races since the tire is not always in contact with the pavement.

A cast wheel is not weak.. Not calling anyone out just my 2 cents. I would love to see physical stress test's on cast vs. forged... All I can vouch for is cast wheels on tt's seem to be class standard with little to no issues... Can anybody pull up the lbs. of the different make of wheels in a single (say big tt 6 or 5 on 5.5) bolt pattern to keep a median?

No you couldnt belive the data from the manufacture... You have to do the testing for yourself to find the results, But honestly who has 10 grand to drop on testing like that for fun... Ill run the cast wheels and pay the pieper when my wheel explodes on my 50 mph bronco. Make sure you guys are all a safe distance from the race course when I go by.. lol..

And the bfg testing is interesting. My personal opinoin is bigger is not better.. Unsprung weight is pretty important to me, and the added weight of an extra 2 studs, a bigger hub, and 2 more lugnuts (hopefully they are titanium lol) and ~4" of tire is just not appealing, we dont even have to go into fuel consumption, h.p., drivetrain etc.

The last time he raced the Humbuggy in Baja he blew up a wheel. Last year at Dakar he killed 2. The truck doesn't break them as it has a smaller lug pattern and more material in the center. Back to the old one casting for everything problem.......

They dont always have to be crashed to break a cast wheel. Luckily this is the only one that has come apart on the Bronco. Lots of bent and cracked ones from whacking them on a big rock first. I hear they are really hard to dig out of a silt bed when they plow in from about 35 with no tire on!

I have to say I've thought about running a 1st gen lightning set too but never really went much further with it

Not really, I think they are 17X8 with a 4.5 backspacing. I'll look when I get home.
