Fire Extinguisher onboard systems?

Post by 87SLbronco »

So after reading about a recent loss of a bronco at Silver lake sand dunes (my stomping grounds) due to to fire I got to thinking about the onboard fire extinguisher systems that are mandatory on all of the race cars that my girlfriends father builds at his shop. I was thinking about doing a custom install of something similar in my bronco and was wondering if anyone has ever done this before and if so if they have any pictures/info or can point me to maybe another forum or link that might help? If I can do this I am still going to mount a couple extinguishers that can be pulled out and used manually for helping someone else or myself if still needed...

I suppose some type of system would be pretty awesome, but I can't imagine spending that much in the outside chance a fire breaks out. For most fires I would figure easy access to an extinguisher would be adequate. Unless you actually race your bronco or feel it has elevated fire vulnerability.

Thats kind of the idea that I'm getting from other sources. But the systems installed in the race cars built at the gf's dads shop have small 2-5lb units set up to spray the drivers compartment. So I was thinking of something kind of like that for under the hood along with a couple mounted in the cab for manual use.

I am all about safety first. I had one in my old prerunner, and I helped set up the one in my buddies truck that I race with. I dont really see a huge need for one in the cab of a Bronco unless it's fully built and you're going racing. Our thought is, is that if the truck is upside down, and we cant get to the extinguishers, we have a backup plan. We have one nozzle pointed toward the carb, and another one pointed at the header (22R). We also have an extinguisher under each seat, and 2 on the rear cage.

I plan on installing a 3 nozzle system. One under hood one under dash and one in the back pointed at the tank. SAFETY IS EVERY THING. its bad enough if u have to use it but think how bad it would be if some one got burnt. Iv been through 3rd and above degree burns and can't wish that on any one. I also am running 2 5 pounders
I have been me for 32 years and know i cant spell for Sh!$ so get over it . Thanks Josh

Both of those last replies damn near hit what I was thinking right on the head. Some pictures of mounting locations of those systems would be sweet if you have any!
